– Customer review on 30/06/2008 This latest adaption of Jane Austen's wonderful book Persuasion is disappointing in some ways - I felt that the casting for many of the characters was just plain wrong! With the notable exception of Sally Hawkins as Anne Elliot. Hawkins put in an excellent performance. The other major fault was simply that it's too short! 90 minutes is nowhere near long enough to do justice to the book... I know that the book is always better than the movie, but in this case the book is considerably better. But then the book just happens to be Jane Austen's best novel, so even if a film/tv adaption is only a fraction as good as this book, it's still going to be superb...
And this movie is superb at times - the whole thing is beautifully and creatively filmed. And the ending... I was bawling by the time it got to the end.
All in all, a rather lovely adaption of one the great classics of English literature. Probably the only individuals to find to much fault with it will be Janeites like me! And to anyone who has watched this but hasn't read the book - do yourself a favour, buy a copy and READ IT! It is exquisite from beginning to end.
