If the streets had a voice, this would be the story they'd tell.
Controversial rapper Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers) makes his big screen debut with 8 MILE, a bracing drama directed by the increasingly audacious Curtis Hanson. Set in 1995 in the bleak, urban battle zone of Detroit, the film follows the struggles of a young man who is desperate to make a better life for himself. Jimmy Smith, Jr., better known as Rabbit, is destined for a life of squalor. Living in a cramped trailer with his deadbeat mom (Kim Basinger), Rabbit works in a factory to make ends meet. His only outlet is hip-hop. Possessing a talent for freestyle rapping, Rabbit still hasn't managed to unleash his true potential. But his best friend, Future (Mekhi Phifer), is determined to make that happen. Future forces Rabbit to enter a freestyle battle that he blew the week before, giving him another chance at redemption.
Hanson's stellar portrait of lower-class urban disillusionment, shot with uncompromisingly gritty realism by Rodrigo Prieto, proves that the issue is no longer about race, it's about money. Eminem delivers a bold performance as the troubled youngster who is still trying to find his place in a harsh, cruel world.

this was a pretty good movie starring eminem, as it was loosely based on his real life, which makes for quite an interesting watch. this movie probably wouldnt have gotten much publicity if it didnt star him, as the story isnt all that great, and the acting is a bit average. some good rap scenes, particuarly the last rap battle though
Although not an Eminem music fan, I did enjoy this movie tremendously. Eminem proves himself in a contest of rappers. He surprisingly acts extremely well and the music is terribly catchy. It shows his life in an ordinary slum life suburban state, and how he is determined to make his mark as a rapper. Worth watching.
Eminem acts surprisingly well in this movie, but given that he is essentially just acting himself perhaps it’s not such a difficult thing. Still when all is said and done this is a pretty good movie with some good freestyle rapping. The atmosphere is drab and fairly harsh and is meant to portray Eminem’s pre-superstar life. All in all an interesting and enjoyable movie.
This is a really bad movie, eminem has started the fad that rappers should make movies as well as most pop stars have, thanks to that 50 cent did one GRRRR, but its such a bad movie, seriously, if you think his musics dull wait till you see the story of his life
this is an excellent movie about a young mans will to survive and succeed as a famous rapper. It has a gripping and heart wrenching story line and the fabolous cast really bring this movie to life with their vivid and memorable characters. A movie that you will not forget quickly and gives you a little insight into the famous rapper EMINEM's life.
The story in "8 Mile" comes across as a pretty ordinary vehicle for showcasing some rather entertaining "rap battles". Eminem does a decent job playing what is probably a character based on some aspect of his own experiences, the rest of the cast merely fill in the gaps around him. Entertaining, won't leave a bad taste in your mouth but won't leave much else behind either. The 14 year old boys from the suburbs will love it.
I am not really a fan of eminem but I found this movie relatively enjoyable. I did not like Britanny Murphy at all, I very rarely do. You would most likely enjoy this movie if you like eminem, and you might enjoy it somewhat if you are not. I probably wouldn't recomend buying it.
um yeah well even though i didnt really enjoy this movie i thought it was pretty boring and never really went anywhere. howver i do admire the film from a technical stand point as it is actually crafted in such a subtle and very careful way. eminem is actually ok howver he is playing his life story, an ok movie definately worth a look.
It was complet dissapoinment, i don't know why people made such a huge fuss over it. The only reason i watch the whole thing was because i was at a movie theater, but trust me if i could have i would have lest in the first ten minutes. The thing i hated most was the ending, i was sitting there watching it when all of a sudden the credits started rolling, in which seemed like the middle of the show and the whole theater kind of went "oh, was that it?". It was one of the most dissapointing movie i have seen in a long time.
