Classic! Well over a hundred viewings (well, over 10 anyway) and the film still hasnt lost its charm. Light-hearted, romantic with a quintisentially dry English wit, this is a great watch for those who love the story. Not only are the characters well-cast, but the story itself mirrors the book quite admirably and the soundtrack provides just the right note (pun intended) of humourous self-mockery. A capable film that captures Austen's tongue-in-cheek text and truly brings it to life. One to watch!
I am an ardent fan of Jane Austin and am not too critical of film adaptations of her stories because I love to watch them on-screen. This was a good adaptation of 'Emma' which I really enjoyed except for Gwyneth Paltrow, whose so-called acting abilities just does not do it for me. I would have much prefered to have seen an unknown English actress take the role. Having said that, the other actors help to 'save' the day, especially Jeremy Northam, who is just yummy.
Emma is a timeless period piece set in the 1800s and starring Gwyneth Paltrow. It is a beautiful story of a woman whose sole purpose in life is to make love matches between people. This story is well written, delightfully filmed and the actors are fantastic and this is definately worth watching
Although a stylized version of the book, this is a thoroughly fun and enjoyable movie...if not just for the visual beauty of the scenes, costumes, etc, but for the wonderful performances by all actors. This is a true "feel good" movie that I watch often, especially when feeling down...it's for all those who are romantics at heart. I'll even admit the ending (near ending really) always makes me cry, sigh and wonder where all the "Mr. Knightlys" have gone. :)
This version of Jane Austen's Emma is a great watch full of romance and humour, staying quite closely to the original story. The casting was excellent with Gwyneth Paltrow playing the impertinent (but good-hearted) Emma Woodhouse to the tee! The music and costumes were brilliant; this movie was light, funny and romantic.
This is a really good film. i really enjoy films set in this time period. The storyline is really funny as well as really intresting. it would have to be a ten out of ten for me. i recommend it to anyone wholikes films set in this time becuase this is one of those great films. A++++ for me, excellent film!
I am such an enthusiastic JA fan that I enjoy different versions of her works. Gwyneth Paltrow does terrific work here as Emma. This version may a bit more "glamorous" than the BBC version but it also brings in more of the humorous side as well. Delightfully done. The DVD has no extras and more importantly the quality of the video transfer is poor, especially when viewed on an HD television.
The only problem with Emma a charming JAne Austen adaptation is the presence of the simpering Gweneth Paltrow. The supporting cast which includes Jeremy Northam, Toni Collette and Ewan McGregor though is impressive. There are some incidental pleasures and a genuine sweetness to the movie but with another lead it may have been brilliant.
Gwyneth Paltrow plays a headstrong young woman addicted to matchmaking those lonely people around her. As a classic Jane Austen interpretation, 'Emma' does well to display the characters lives in rich vibrant detail. Although made more than five years ago, it is the best interpretation so far. The acting is of a very high quality, i enjoyed it very much. A definite family favourite!
