Possibly the best adaption so far of an English Classic. Very true to the book, the setting and the time of the industrial revolution in the North of England. Dont expect to see another Pride and Predjudice but something grittier and more realistic - the writer and actors have stayed true to the book and yet given it life. Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford has also been adapted to TV with Judy Dench in one of the roles not available here yet but hopefully to come.
A beautiful adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel. Excellent acting from all casts. This miniseries has to be the best BBC-produced period drama yet. It is a story of love across class divide and about the industrial working conditions of England's north in the 1800s. I would definitely recommend this miniseries to anyone that want to see an excellent period drama or just simply enjoy a film of superb acting. I was definitely surprised because I didn't expect it to be this good. Definitely a 5 stars from me. If you like this one, definitely try her other BBC adaptation Wives and Daughters.
I absolutely loved this, it had it all. there was a good love story that had the normal predujices that were around in this period. Also there was lots of drama to keep the story going.
I would reccommend to anyone who loves period dramas.
"North & South" was released in the UK in November 2004 and in the US in July 2005. Since its first broadcast, viewers across the globe have hailed it as one of the best - if not the best - British period miniseries ever produced. It was voted BBC's "Best of 2004" in drama, actor and actress categories, among others.
It is probably NOT for the whole family as it is rather slow and seemingly grim especially compared to other films based on well-loved English literature such as Jane Austen's stories and the Bronte sisters stories.
This is a novel-based film set in the industrial town of Milton, Northern England, in the 1800s. Miss Margaret Hale finds herself moved from the beautiful countryside town of Helstone to grey and dreary Milton, at the request of her father, a parson, who has become disillusioned with the traditional church of England and feels convicted to reaccess his long-held beliefs. The adjustment comes slowly, but as the story unfolds Miss Hale's prejudices about Milton and it's folk, especially regarding the stern and rough Mr. John Thornton, change and she embraces Milton as he home.
This movie, North and South is a classic story set in history. This period piece is about a man and a woman needing to learn to accept and overcome personality differences, and the woman is allowed to show spirit and character. This movie is a classic love story for the entire family to enjoy
a fantastic story from Jane Austen, definitely worth while seeing. i greatly enjoyed watching this with my family, they all really loved it just as much as i did. this greatly anticipated film was a fantastic success, and i am positive that any person - no matter what kind of story they are into - will enjoy it. a real crowd pleaser. sinead cusak and lucy brown star.
