In 1966, a tough, skinny guitar singer who called himself J.R. Cash walked into the soon-to-be-famous Sun Studios in Memphis. It was a moment that would have an indelible effect on American culture. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and voice as deep and black as night, Cash sang blistering songs of heartache and survival that were gutsy, full of real life and unlike anything heard before.
That day kicked off the electrifying early career of Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix). As he pioneered a fiercely original sound that blazed a trail for rock, country, punk, fold and rap stars to come, Cash began a rough-and-tumble journey of personal transformation. In the most volatile period of his life, he evolved from a self-destructive pop star into the iconic "Man in Black" - facing down his demons, fighting for the love that would raise him up and learning how to walk to razor-thin line between destruction and redemption.
The story of the young Johnny Cash and his incendiary love affair with June Carter Cash (Reese Witherspoon) comes to life in Walk The Line.

Whenever I see so much "Oscar worthy" tags/blurbs in an ad campaign I get nervous, see Cinderella Man. Usually you look closely at the fine print and see that the esteemed critic lauding the film is Joe Schmoe from the One Stop Light Bugle Press in Buttcreek, Illinois or a low level flunky who just happens to work for the media conglomerate that is distributing the film. So my heart sank a little when a film I have been eagerly awaiting was swaddled with such praise when the ads hit the air.
But they're right for once.
Joaquin Phoenix wears Johnny Cash like a suit. He isn't doing a Rich Little impersonation, you don't rub your eyes in disbelief, but he channels a man so distinct in appearance and voice to a level that is beyond admirable. One of the traits that made Johnny Cash a legend was that nobody sounded or looked like him. Short of a computer generated Cash walking around in his own bio-pic like one of those John Wayne beer commercials this is the definitive representation.
And yet Phoenix may not give the best performance in the film.
Reese Witherspoon more than holds up her end in a role that easily could have been reduced to a clichéd bumpkin. Witherspoon portrays the on-stage June in the way June portrayed her own "character", the stage persona that people adored, while giving her the resolve and inner strength to be the woman who tamed a hell-bent, grizzly bear of a man like John.
The chemistry of Phoenix and Witherspoon together in any scene, but their on-stage duets in particular, are truthful in a way that resonates long after the credits. I know that unless you have been living in a cave for the past week you have likely been bombarded with the word that the actors sing themselves without use of lip syncing. I have never been a fan of musicals, or even musical performances in a film. They generally seem forced and uncomfortable to me, the moment when I stop experiencing the story and feel reminded that I am watching a movie. I never felt that in this film. I never felt that their singing took the focus of the film, but the performances work with the story like no other music bio I have ever seen. I never felt as if I was being led through the catalog, the songs felt as organic and natural as any spoken dialog in a great narrative.
This film far exceeded my expectations and afforded me the first trip home from a theater with a true feeling of satisfaction in a very, very long time. Highly recommended.
this movie was simply spectacular. the cast was awsome with joaquin phoenix player johnny cash and reese witherspoon playing june carter. it is quite amazing how well the performed and resembled the true characters.
i wasnt a great fan of johnny cash so i didnt really know that much about him so some of the storyline dragged a bit for me but it still ended up being one of those that i love.
this movie is a true classic! I dont know where to begin, the acting is great - you couldnt ask for a better cast. Jaquin Phoenix is perfect as Johnny Cash and he sounds like him too when he sings! and Reese Witherspoon is adorable as June Carter, their accents are perfect and the whole movie is very well done, i like how the actors sing themselves. You have to see it even if you don't know who johnny cash was because it is great!
as a movie based on a musicai i would have to say it was pretty good. it deplicted his life and what it must have been like for him well. but then again as an overall movie i felt it was a bit to slow paced and emphisied his downfall to much and not his actual rein as the new king of rock after elvis.
great story about johnny cash and hit wife. both joaquin and reese are superb, their accents are great, and they are both realistic and enjoyable in their roles. the music is great too, really fits the piece, and i cant believe that they sing it themselves! talk about talented! a bit boring in some places, but overall a great watch!
It's a really good movie telling the life of Johnny Cash as a young boy, emerging artist and middle aged man. There are a few teary moments and you really get caught up in the story. Being a true story make is all the more inspirational. The actors did an amazing job and what i couldn't belive was that they sang all the songs themselves. How wonderful!!! And they did it so well. I really recommend this movie to anyone-a real classic!
The music is good, the acting is good and the storyline is ok. This movie was held up on a pedestal before it even showed, and although in some aspects it did not measure up, for an autobiographical movie of a country singing legend, it did ok in my book. Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix have great acting styles in this movie and pull you into the life of June and Johnny Cash. It is a great watch.
Highly entertaining... the elfin Reese Witherspoon is magnificent as June Carter Cash, and Joauquin Phoenix does a great job as the man in black hisself... fantastic music, and a great look at a different time, when Cash travelled with other stars such as Roy Orbison,Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and even Elvis hisself... well worth a look... a very good film...
Excellent film, the music, the story, everything was great, and i wasnt a Johnny Cash fan until seeing this .... awesome .... dont think Reese deserved best actress nod tho....joaquin pheonix is amazing. he sang every song instead of lip sync. wow. bad ending in my opinion though
Well i never expected too much of this movie, i had seen Ray and thought that was awful so my only hope for this movie was that it didnt skip over johnnys drug addiction. Overall the movie works as a romance which is very affecting at times but overall its a movie that is quite disposable as it really does not matter who the characters are, there is only surface depth in this movie but an ok movie all the same.
