Based on the true life experiences of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca, the film focuses on half-brothers Paco and Cruz, and their bi-racial cousin Miklo. It opens in 1972, as the three are members of an East L.A. gang known as the "Vatos Locos", and the story focuses on how a violent crime and the influence of narcotics alter their lives. Miklo is incarcerated and sent to San Quentin, where he makes a "home" for himself. Cruz becomes an exceptional artist, but a heroin addiction overcomes him with tragic results. Paco becomes a cop and an enemy to his "carnal", Miklo.
Taylor Hackford directed this urgent melodrama about the realities of street crime, gangs, and prison life among the Chicanos of East Los Angeles. Miklo (Damian Chapa), Paco (Benjamin Bratt) and Cruz (Jesse Borrego) are three friends who are living in the East Los Angeles of 1972 as it is torn apart by violence. When the gang violence hits the three friends, they are affected by their participation in the bitter violence in different ways. Cruz, an artist, becomes crippled, and he sinks deeply into drug addiction. Paco, an accessory to murder, joins the military to avoid jail time, leading to a spot on the LAPD. Miklo, the kid with the gun, is sent to jail, where he slowly rises up in the ranks of La Onda, the San Quentin Latino gang.
Blood in blood out is the best vato movie ever. Its about three boys growing up in the hood, and even as men they have to do the dirty work togeather no matter the ups and downs, this is a great movie that everybody should own and watch, it is a gangster classic that nobody should miss out on.
* Agreed, shouldnt be in Horror, perhaps Drama* This film is long but worth every minute. An oldie but a goodie!. The themes and stories in this movie are somewhat universal and can hence be applied to any culture. Violent but necessary in telling the tale. Unsure if this edition has extra features, but they are great too, you see the development of this great film.
This film is a masterpiece. This film follows the lives of 3 street youths who after one event sends each of their lives in different directions. A must see movie. Blood In Blood Out is an amazing powerful story that will stick with you for many years to come.
This film and "American Me" have alot of the same factors, but conflicting info. I think this director has seen one to many movies. I mean, when have you heard of the "BGA"? I think it's actually the "BGF". Also, it's not Aryan Vanguard, it's Aryan Brotherhood. It is also funny to note that there are 4 or 5 photos on the back of the video box, at least 2 of which (the one with Benjamin Bratt and the chick, and the family photo) that never appear in the movie. Plus that dude from Fame the TV series (Jesse Borregas)is a pretty lousy portrayal of a junkie. I don't know, this is a cool movie as far as the prison scenes, but at 3 hours, settle in. You can get this for a couple of bucks on ebay. It's worth checking out once. Notable performances by Ving Rhames and Billy Bob Thorton, who is lucky enough to bed down with Angelina Jolie, mm-hmmm. I saw the bald dude who plays the head Aryan on an episode of "Night Stand". Too funny. BTW, if any cons are reading this, and I am wrong about the factions in Q, please correct me.
