Based on a Stephen King novel, Christine is the story about a car that comes off the factory line evil, and the young man who becomes obsessed with it. Not a bad film, the only problem is it misses out a lot of the plot from the book. In the book the car itself wasn't evil, but it was possessed by the spirit of it's previous owner. In the movie it's pretty much a killer car. Fans of Stephen King may want to pass this up.
Highschool geek Arnie Cunningham falls in love with "Christine", a bright red 1958 Plymouth Fury which has seen much better days. Setting himself the task of restoring the car to its original condition, his friends notice that the car is not the only thing that is changing. Arnie seems to spend more and more time with his car. He's also developed a sort of cocky arrogance which does not seem like the real Arnie at all.
The plot is pretty basic, which involves a soically-awkward (see nerdy) guy who is seemingly hypnotized by a wreck of a used car he passes. He immediately buys it and begins working to repair it. As the car improves, Arnie the Nerd begins to change from a sniveling fart to a smooth-talking ladies' man. Unfortuntely, the transition suffers a bit, as Arnie is played by Keith Gordon, who's probably much prettier as a director than he'd ever be as an actor. His transition goes a bit extreme when local bullies destroy Christine and make a doody on the dashboard. (The insolence.)
Well, we all know where we're going from here. Anger boils, ex-bullies run, and all the nasty horror freaks cheer as the delinquents get squished. Arnie's football buddy and new girlfriend run around trying to help, but things get real ugly. It's all done straight, though, with an eye for details and dark style. The scene where Christine repairs herself is truly amazing.
Special standouts: The car itself, which is truly beautiful. (Makes the scene where she gets trashed almost painful.) The music, which I repeat, sets a great, gloomy tone for the movie. And the great scene where Arnie screams "Fuck!" in front of his parents and almost strangles his Dad. (Arnie is like 5'4" and 150 pounds soaking wet.) John Carpenter is a genius, and I mean that.
Classic! One of my favourite movies of all time! 5 STARS – No DVD collection is complete without this title amongst it. Powerful performances, superb production value with strong clear direction… a masterpiece. A must see for all movie fans, some might not agree with me but this film with live on for many years after the actors have all but been forgotten!1
As it is with so many of Stephen King novels that are turned into movies, this is NOT one of the greatest of all time. A story about a 17 year old girl who is manipulated into a deathly rampage by a 1958 Plymouth Fury. I recommend you read the book instead.
Nothing like the book. What is it about Stephen King stories and their movie counterparts? The stories are great and then the movies are flops. The thing it that most of these movies starts of really good with a creepy premise and building themes, then all of a sudden it just gets cheesy and losing momentum. By the end you’re just bored.
alot of stephen King adaptation movies are realy hard to watch,
but christine is very much enjoyable. the movie manages to sway you into it's warped little reality charming you with it's 80's cheese.
before you know it you want the girlfriend to figure out a way to stop the insanely
jelouse car from killing her and her boyfriend.
This has a very 80's feel due to when it was made however they still manage to capture the essence of the story. a nerdy boy falls in love with a car, but the car is alive and doesn't want any competition. This is an old cult classic. Don't expect modern day effects, just a good old fashioned story of a boys love for his car and a touch of evil
Get out your log books for this cult classic! This horror feature will have you in stitches, as a clueless car lover becomes obsessed with his beloved, but murderous vehicle. Heaps of great suporting roles and cameos. No, depth, but then thats the beauty of cult- no strings viewing. Keep your eyes out, because this baby's coming to life!
John Carpentar just manages to keep on getting out the goods as this is another one of his better films. It seems to have even inspired Quentin Tarantino who is making a Car-Slasher film soon in the form of "GRIND". It may have also given him his tag line for Kill Bill "Hell Hath no Fury Like Christine". Its a good film and one not to be taken too seriously.
