One of Peter Jackson's earlier films, and probably the first two be quite different from Bad Taste, Dead Alive or Meet the Feebles. Based on a true story about two New Zealand girls whose friendship escalates to the point where they can't be without each other. At a point where they have an almost lesbian relationship going, one of the mother's decides that their friendship isn't healthy, and tries to send her daughter away. Prepared to do anything to stay together, the girls plot and carry out the murder of her mother. With actual extracts from the girl's diary, Heavenly Creatures takes a little bit to get off the ground, but once it starts it turns into a brutally honest movie, showing what Peter Jackson could be capable of.
This movie is quite freaky to think of what could have happened in the 50's in your own neighbourhood. Probably the thing that drew me more to watching it was the fact that the two actresses were unknown in the movie until now. Kate Winslet is just gorgous in this thriller about girls not being able to get their own way, and being on opposite sides of class in the 50's. Worth watching.
A true story which is told with attention to detail that makes it often disturbing. Peter Jackson brings the story to life using claymation which makes the visions and stories seem exactly as they can only in a persons imagination. Altogether worth a watch but not for the easily scared or anyone who happens to live near Victoria Park where the murder took place. The film shows that these two girls were like no other and were therefore prone to doing unusual things which makes it interesting but slightly unrealistic through the vivid imaginings but this could be the intended effect.
This starts out as a pretty nice movie than starts getting disturbing and twisted by the end. It is acted with skill and the story itself it meant to be based on a true story which makes it all the more interesting albeit with that dark edge. The music also is very different and brings a quirky feel at times. All in all this is worth of watch.
No-one really knows why these two girls came together and were persuaded to do something as extreme as what they did but the story of how their friendship blossomed is intriguing to watch. This movie received much critical acclaim for its two young lead actors Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet who were both unknowns at the time, but where Kate moved on to have a successful career Melanie has not had nearly as much success with only a few small roles to her credit after this. However director Peter Jackson has gone on to direct several blockbuster movies including the Lord Of The Rings series and King Kong.
I have to admit that I first intended to see this movie when I was a young teenager upon hearing there were lesbian-esque nude scenes within, but I was really taken aback by the story here and it really drew me in and the climax was shocking yet memorable.
Based on a true story, this movie is one of Kate Winslets earliest productions, as well as one of her best. This is a story of the events lead sing up to the murder which shocked New Zealand. Two girls, having fallen in love with one another are determined to stay together, and when one is forced to move away with her mother, the girls plot to kill the mother so they can remain together. Chilling.
