i think that this movie was ok, but i think that more could have been done with it. johnny depp's acting was fine, but his characters appearance was pretty iffy, compared to chocolat and pirates of the caribbean. the movie itself was alright, parts were predictable but the ending was cool and suspenseful - didnt see it coming. definitely give it a watch if you like stephen king.
Usually, Stephen King writes great stories, or even just good stories, on which crap films are based. The Shining and It are very good examples of stories so rich in detail that, in film format, fail to make sense or grip the viewer for one reason or another. Secret Window, Secret Garden, on the other hand, is part of a ponderous, dull collection of material that leaves readers confused, even feeling ripped off. While Four Past Midnight had its highlights, Secret Window, Secret Garden was definitely not one of them. The film, simply retitled Secret Garden, manages to tell the story in less than a hundred minutes, and does so in a considerably more economic fashion.
Part of this economy can be attributed to the difference between film and literature. In the novella, King takes pages and pages to describe some of the most tangential things, such as the taste of a cigarette. In film, details such as the appearance of John Shooter is immediately clarified for the viewer. This is one area where the film improves on the novella, in fact. Aside from a reasonably tall man with a Southern drawl, as King himself might put it, the character is intangible. John Turturro, one of the most amusing actors of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, makes John Shooter all his own, and therefore considerably more frightening.
Like the novella, the film's entire strength rests upon the lead character, a novelist named Morton Rainey. For the first half of the novella, Morton is a very likable, even understandable character. In film, Johnny Depp irons out the flaws that dominate the second half, and keeps the viewer in his corner of the ring until the shock ending. The film ending is different from the novella ending, and this is one of the few areas where the film adaptation does not work quite as well as it would have hoped. The ending of the novella leaves Morton's fate, or rather the complete details thereof, open to question. By contrast, the film's ending leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination, something that Stephen King would have abhorred in the days when he wrote such classics on which classic films have been based, namely The Dead Zone.
The rest of the cast do the best they can with limited roles, and are generally quite successful. Maria Bello as Amy Rainey is one of those performances where an actor takes a character that turned into an empty shadow during the novella and makes something substantial out of it. Lest anyone think I am pounding on Stephen King for no reason here, the number of times I read Secret Window, Secret Garden in my teens when it first hit Australian shelves in paperback format is beyond count. All I can remember from it is the premise and how it ends. By comparison, while Secret Window is not going to set the world ablaze, it is one of the better films to be made from King's material.
In all, I gave Secret Window an eight out of ten. It loses a couple of points for a jarring ending, but it has two of the best performances of King's characters ever captured on celluloid. It is well worthy of a viewing.
"Secret Window" is another one of those eerie thrillers where danger lurks within the shadows. We can almost feel it, and so can the hero, as he walks through his house, armed with a weapon, ready to defend himself at all costs. He hears a noise from somewhere behind him, spins around, and suddenly realizes it was just his imagination. He sighs, puts down the weapon, turns around, and BOO! There's the bad guy, who has somehow managed to enter the locked home and avoid being detected. What if, I wonder, one of these times, the bad guy was seen as he entered? What if the Fisherman from "I Know What You Did Last Summer" had been spotted, and confronted, by one of the teenagers? What if Norman Bates' "Mother" had been exposed from the start? Then there presumably would be no movie, of course.
Based on a Stephe King short story, Secret Window is a dark and suspensful thriller. Starring Johnny Depp, Secret Window is about an author in the preoceeds of a divorce, suffering from writer's block, who starts to get harrassed by a man who claims Depp stole his idea for one of his earlier books. Made as a sleeper film, the type of thing Depp often goes for, Secret Window is a movie that must be seen.
Mort Rainey (Depp), a writer just coming off of a troublesome divorce with his ex-wife, Amy (Bello), finds himself stalked at his remote lake house by a psychotic stranger (Turturro) who claims Mort stole his best story idea (changing just the ending)... (Hutton plays Bello's new boyfriend; Dutton plays a private investigator hired to make Turturro's character leave Mort alone.)
A good DVD. Johnny Depp gives one of his better performances in this creepy little movie. The story is vintage Stephen King and bears some similarities to The Shining. The bonuses included four deleted scenes which were interesting to see, but I don't think anybody really misses them from the movie. The best bonus in my opinion was the animated storyboards of the opening credits and the garden. A nicely made movie.
Classic! One of my favourite movies of all time! 5 STARS – No DVD collection is complete without this title amongst it. Powerful performances, superb production value with strong clear direction… a masterpiece. A must see for all movie fans, some might not agree with me but this film with live on for many years after the actors have all but been forgotten!!@!!
Secret Window is a fairly poor offering from Johnny Depp. The acting is nothing special and the plot itself is pretty predictable. The entire production has a ‘made for tv’ fell about it.
I would give this one a miss unless you are a real die hard Depp or Stephen King fan.
this is a pretty crazy movie! i really enjoyed it the first time i watched it, and totally did not see the twist coming, but then i watched it again a year later and didnt really think it was anything special. johnny depp does a really excellent job of acting, however, and he makes the role seem really believable. a good twist at the end also makes for a good movie!
This a very werid movie, this is one of the few movies ive seen johnny depp in that ive actually been impressed by (pirates of the caribean movies being the only other 2) but seriously an excellent movie, its a hard thing to follow early onso its definitly one of the movies you need to watch a second time to get whats actually happened
