In the small French village of Lansquenet where life has remained the same for 100 years, the wind of change is about to sweep through it, altering it forever...
Free-spirited wanderer, Vianne Rocher has arrived with her daughter to set up a chocolaterie during the Lenten period of abstinence. Her arrival is frowned upon by some locals but to others, her presence is life-changing. Somehow, almost magically, her delectable treats are tantalising more than just tastebuds - they are curing lost hopes, awakening unexpected passions and fulfilling unspoken desires.
From acclaimed film-maker Lasse Hallstrom (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES, MY LIFE AS A DOG) comes the most sweetly surprising film of the year. Nominated for 5 Academy Awards, and starring Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love) and Johnny Depp (Blow), CHOCOLAT is the most delicious comic fable - a celebration of difference and a feast for the senses.

go johnny depp! what a beautiful little story, and so well shot! this film deserves some kind of award in cinematography. i loved the whole sepia tone the scenes took place in and the costumes were just darling (especially fell in love with the red capes the mother and daughter dons when they go moving)
well this movie is a french movie. there is also a book to this story. its a magical sense type movie with nice chocolate. starring mr. Johnny Depp. With her chocolate shop everybody loves to buy cos it has some kind of magical ingredient. in a sad town in france where nobody smile. comes this lady and they daughter, they open up a small chocolate shop which every body enjoys and wants more of it. bringing smiles to people's face and gives boost to love life. everyone who tried her chocolate can smile and be happy but the one who were against it stayed unsmiley.
I have only seen this movie for the first time today. I have to admit that I hesitated somewhat as I did not believe I would like it because it was described to me as a 'chick flick', a genre I do not subscribe to even though I am a girl. How wrong was that description. I loved the film, the story, the scenery. Such genuine & diverse characters. The actors chosen were perfect for their roles, I cannot imagine anyone else playing the parts. The DVD I had was borrowed, but I intend to buy a copy for myself as it would fit into my small library of movies. I have to see it again & this time I will share the experience with my partner as I know he will appreciate the story. Lida
I really loved this movie...loved it soo much I bought the DVD and watch it every now and then. Johny Depp is really hot in any of the scenes he's in, but Juliet Binoche really is the star, and plays the owner of the chocholate shop to perfection.
I would really recommend watching this on a cold rainy day, as it really warms the heart...cheessy....well...yes

Locked in tradition the villagers of Lansquenet have settled for life as it has always been.. however, the arrival of Vianne and her daughter brings a wind of change as she sets up a chocolaterie and her chocolates transform the villagers and their problems. The town does not entirely welcome Viannes methods and she is bought into battle with the towns Mayor Reynoud (Alfred Molina) and as he tries to undermine Vianne the battle reveals her own shortcomings. Juliette Binoche is devine as Vianne and Johnny Depp wonderful as the character that captures her heart. Judi Dench and Alfred Molina play exceptionally in their roles. The cinematography is is brilliant from scenes of the French countryside and village to the visual feast of chocolates. I fell in love with France when I first saw this movie and have watched it many times. I never tire of the film as I get something different from it each time I view it. Some may write this off as a cute fable but as lovely a story as it is it goes much deeper and has the ability to reveal things about ourselves and society/culture. There is so much to this story which the writer has woven so cleverly. This is one of my all time favourite films and I can highly recommend it to chocoholics and romantics at heart. Slightly different to the book- but don't let that put you off this movie is devine!!!
Sit down with a block of choc while you watch this movie because otherwise you're in trouble! Definately mouthwatering goodness (and I'm not just talking about the food - the hero isn't too bad either). A cute wee story, not sure how well it relates to the book so you don't need to have read it to enjoy the story. A good bit of fluff!
sigh, only johnny depp could have played such a delicious role! in this gorgeous movie, a woman and her daughter wander in to a sleepy little town and set up a chocolate shop, right in the middle of lent. she is faced with opposition from all sides, yet manages to make friends and fall in love
The acting is as delicious as the title. Binoche is, as always, amgnificent. Johnny Depp is practicing for his later role as Jack Sparrow, usually I really like him but kind of couldn't really believe his character, seemed a little one dimensional in a very three dimensional cast. However, I thoroughtly enjoyed and would recommend it to all, enjoy!
