Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is a campy space opera loosely based upon the comic strip character and serials of the 1930’s. The background to the show involves Captain William ‘Buck’ Rogers, an astronaut who is accidentally frozen by the life support system of his deep space probe, awaking 500 years later to a vastly different earth – once ravaged by nuclear fallout, but now well advanced in its space exploration technology.
This cult 70’s show lasted just 2 seasons, the first being the better one. Gil Gerard is excellent as the title character – he seems to get a new romantic interest each episode and also gets to show off his chest hair plenty of times. The costumes are a little laughable as they have that glittery psychedelic look, though they add to the nostalgic charm.
The show is probably best known for Twiki, a cheeky robot voiced by Mel Blanc.
I am beginning to realise I had absolutely terrible taste as a kid (or more likely I just didn't know any better). Some shows are just as good as you remember despite all the cheap effects and costumes -this unfortunately isn't one of them. Did this show always use to be this cheesy?
Man, this came out back in 1979! This was HUUUGE when it first came out... Gil Gerard plays a 20th century air force pilot who is awoken after 500 years of suspended animation, as a big hero in the 25th century... Erin Gray is great as the beautiful Wilma Deering, and Twiki was your classic sidekick robot... I can't believe it only ran for two seasons!!
