Agreeing with the mojority here. I love this film. I remember seeing it in the theatre new, when you could get an ice cream (choc-bomb) AND a bag of chips for $1.50. Apart from the fabulous Queen soundtrack the movie is full of life in its comic book like colours, great set designs and hilarious acting. When seeing this again as an adult I love it more... and I didnt realise all the adult conatations, references there were in there when little, so this made for even more funny watching. ie Timothy Dalton mentions a certain act only adults should ever hear or know about. Sexy women, hunky men, cool spaceships. This is in my top ten favourites. Sadly there hasnt been a sequel......yet.... is Ming still alive?
Ah yes, the famous Flash Gordon. Well it rocks. I absolutely love it and has been my favourite from the first time I watched it. I then went straight down to the shops and bought it. It's fabulous and the guy is so hot. Full of action and keeps you wondering what is going to happen but not to the point where you don't enjoy it. It is a great movie for all the family, but obviously not the littlies. Sorry guys, adults movie only
During the middle section of this movie, our hero 'Flash' Gordon, accompanied by Ornella "Most beautiful woman in the world" Muti, witnesses ex Bond Timothy Dalton giving ex Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan the sweet merciful release of death by putting him to the(cardboard) sword (offscreen). "Its an initiation" purrs the shapely Muti, "I just love initiations".
This 1980 version of the perennial Saturday morning sci-fi cliffhanger is a feast for the senses. That is, if your senses crave lashings of junkfood. With an eye meltingly lurid palette of colours and rocktastic Queen soundtrack Flash Gordon was the perfectly overblown movie for the start of an overblown decade. The costumes are extravagantly cheesy, the effects farcical, the acting hilarious.
Almost every minor character was hammed up to perfection by the cream (or perhaps custard) of character actors of the time including such luminaries as Rocky Horrors Richard O Brien, Phillip "I corrected them" Stone from the Shining and the half-man, half-beast that is Brian Blessed.
The only minor flaw in this popcorn delight is the fact that it is, in almost every way - a terrible, awful movie - I HIGHLY recommend it.
What else do I have to say but?FLASH! AHH AHH and everybody knows what I'm saying or actually singing. The problem is the song is more popular than the actual movie, starring Sam Jones, as Flash; Melody Anderson, as Dale Arden; Topol, as Dr. Hans Zarkov; Timothy Dalton, as Prince Baron; and, of course, Max Von Sydow, as Emperor Ming, The Merciless. Let's face it... this was a really stupid movie with bad acting, but for some reason, I absolutely love this movie. I always have and I always will, in fact, I hope they make a sequel to it.
The story is simple enough -- the universe is run by this emperor named Ming, The Merciless, and he is exactly as his name says - merciless. One day, he gets bored and decides to destroy a planet just for the fun of it. The problem is the planet he chooses just happens to be earth. Ming starts by causing all of these natural disasters like earthquakes and hail that turns into fire and all types of nasty little intergalactic tricks. Now I'll introduce you to our hero, Mr. Flash Gordon, Quarterback for the New York Jets, and Dale Arden (I have no idea what she does). Their plane goes down due to some tomfoolery at the hands of Emperor Ming. It just so happens that their plane crashes in the back yard of a crazy scientist, Dr. Hans Zarkov, who was fired from NASA because he was conjuring crazy ideas of earth being attacked from some unknown alien forces. As luck would have it, he was secretly building a rocket ship to go to space and stop the attack. Well, to make a long story short, Dr. Zarkov kidnaps Flash and Dale and they enter outer space to stop Emperor Ming's evil plan, save the earth, and bring peace to the universe. He meets a whole lot of bad guys along the way, kills them, and he makes some good friends too, including Emperor Ming's daughter (who's pretty hot).
Some of the best things about this movie were the soundtrack, performed by Queen, and how this movie just blatantly refuses to take itself seriously. Every time I see this movie, I'm reminded of a time when movies could be made just for fun. They did the best they could with the money they had and, even though the special effects weren't too spiffy, they were still great.
Everyone has one special movie that when you tell someone you liked it, the person looks at you like you're crazy. Flash Gordon is mine and I know I'm not alone on this. One more thing, if you know where I can get the white T-shirt that Flash wears, let me know cause I've been looking for it for years!
This is such a classic great movie,it would even rival starwars in the story department. The cast of caracters is fantastic and evryone did a convincing job.All hail Ming The Merciless. He was such a cool and evil alien person kinda dude and the winged men were very cool indeed.

I rather enjoyed this movie and so did my teenage sons! The effects are of course outdated in this current day but I found the tongue in cheek approach and the energy and verve put into their performances by the cast hugely entertaining and enjoyable. The actors seem to be having enormous fun with their characters and the script is irreverently comic. Combined with a cheesy but perky soundtrack, there was a lot to be entertained by.
An entertaining little cult classic for all the family.
Comic strip film adaptations are always a risky proposition and more often then not wind up inintentially hilarious because they are so bad. Flash Gordon has a certain colourful visual appeal a bizarre Queen soundtrack and some really really bad performances. But there isn't anything particularly good to counterbalance the bad so it all comes out looking bad.
