This is the finest series I've ever seen on television. The fact that is based upon an excellent novel is only part of the equation. The locations, the music, the acting - everything comes together so beautifully in this project. Who else, besides Evelyn Waugh, writes lines like: "I was taken by the double illusion of familiarity and strangeness." or "A thin bat-squeak of sensuality..." or " I found myself close to heaven in those days."
I must single out Sir John Gielgud. Every time he is on screen, he is hilarious. What a treasure.
Watching this series is a bit like getting lost in reading "Lord of The Rings." You like the 'place' that they take you so much, you don't want it to end. If cable ever offered a Brideshead Revisited channel, I'd be among the first to subscribe.
My "revisit" to Brideshead Revisited after nearly 25 plus years absence was well worth while. I had forgotten what a great yarn Evelyn Waugh spun. His characters are beautifully defined in this marvellous production and supurbly brought to life by the (then) fledling talents of Jeremy Irons, Diana Quick and Anthony Andrews. Sir John Guilguid's portrayal of Jeremy Iron's father in this production is quite simply marellous and you find yrouself laughing out loud at his eccentric utterances. Well worth having in one's DVD library and I plan to re-visit this great production it every 5 years or so...
this is a great dvd set of this tv show. its very compelling viewing with exeptional bonus/extra features. Anybody who was a fan of this series will enjoy this dvd set! yes, it may seem expensive, but it is well worth the money! you will not regret this purchaes. five stars from me!
Based on Evelyn Waugh's 1945 magnum opus novel... This 1981 TV adaptation minseries was enormously popular (I still remember my Mum loved watching it) and is still considered by many today as one of the best British television productions... the novel was an expression of Waugh's Catholic faith (Andrew's family are landed gentry and Catholic in a Protestant nation) and deals with the themes of grace and forgiveness... Charles Ryder (Jeremy Irons) and Sebastien (Anthony Andrews) meet and Oxford and become friends; Irons, years later as a British officer, comes to the house known as Brideshead, and, via flashback, remembers much of his past that centred around this unique family and home... Laurence Olivier won an Emmy as Lord Marchman... 11 hours of classic television...
Brideshead Revisited is a lovely story set on the eve of world war two in England in 1939. This movie does have historical significance, but rather than focussing on the world war as many movies from this time do, it focusses on the significance of an english country house on a soldiers life. Very good movie
