Keeping Up Appearances has got to be one of my favourite shows EVER!
I remember watching it years ago when it was first on BBC1, and thinking it was SOOO funny! Now it's back on UK Gold, and I can't help but watch it every time it's on.
Patrcia Routledge as Hyacinth is fantastic! The casting and acting are perfect. OK, as some people have pointed out, there are so many running jokes - but that is what is all part of what makes this show great!
Hyacinth's candlelight suppers, her answering the phone "the Bucket residence, the lady of the house speaking!", Elizabth constantly spilling her coffee, always trying to resist her daily order from Hyacinth for morning coffee, Emmett and "she'll sing at me", Onslow "Oh Nice", Vilot - "It's MA Sister Violet, "Daddy!", the vicar, Rose and Mr. whoever, and throughout all this poor old Richard, lol.
And one of the best and most famous Hyacinth lines - "Sauna, Swimming Pool and room for a pony!!!!"
It is a true proper British comedy, and is up there with the likes of that other great 90's BBC sitcom - One Foot in the Grave. And also the likes of To The Manor Born, The Good Life, and Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.
Everybody you talk to always raises a smile when you mention "the Bucket woman"!
Only the other day I watched an episode when Hyacinth wanted to test drive a new Rolls Royce so she could get one-up on another one of her posh local rivals - Lydia Hawsworth, whom had just overtaken them in her brand new Jag.
She made Richard drive it out of the garage without the salesman's permission, and take it to this posh hotel deliberately, as she knew this was where this woman had afternoon tea. Of course Rose, Daisy and Onslow turn up as usual, so they have to get out of there before she bumps into them - how embarrassing! lol. When they get into her "getaway car" as she callas it to Richard, the police turn up and arrest them outside the hotel! And then just at that point who turns up but Lydia Hawksworth!
This is just an example of how great this show is!
Quite frankly, I really don't understand how anybody could NOT like it!
If they don't, then I actually feel slightly sorry for them - as they are missing out on so much enjoyment!
Oh...and contrary to what somebody has said - in my opinion it is just about the closest thing to perfection that a sitcom can get!
This series is an absolute classic. The humour is pure British at it's best. Your heart goes out to poor Richard (hapless husband of social climbing Hyacinth), and the laughter just keeps on coming. Everyone in this series is first class and if you enjoy English humour, don't miss this.
I really do love this show. I had some great times with my family gathered round the TV laughing at this hillarious show! If you have not seen it and enjoy british humour, then this is definately a great buy or gift idea! You will have a great time watching this stuffy old lady trying to make good, and come off on top!
Another great British comedy - Mrs Bucket (pronounced Bouquet, mind you) is hilarious to watch... even in the end credits!! I absolutely adored watching this show and seeing her stand out like a sore thumb among everyone else... especially her relatives who are the absolute opposite!! That said, it does get tiring after awhile because her character is just so predictable, the laughs just don't seem to come as easy after a few episodes.
My sister-in-law has this whole collection, I had only ever seen a few episodes and thought they were ok, but after watching dvd after dvd, i had to stop i just couldnt take it any longer, i was in pain from laughing, it hits home for me as half my family are pommies, so i got a bit of reflection in it. Absolutely hilarious and definately sitting back with a bunch of mates and have a long huge side splitting chuckle!!!!!
I just can't get enough of this wannabe snob, Hyacinth Bucket (or said as Bouquet). She is just hilarious. Living in the working class lifestyle, she is determined to be known as an upperclass lady and her expressions and comments while being the complete snob is unbelieveably classic. You wouldn't want to miss this at all!
If you have never watched an episode of Keeping Up Appearances, don't hesitate any longer! I've been watching this since I was a kid. Hyacinth Bucket is absolutely hilarious in her role as a middle class woman trying to act like she belongs to the upper class. This is so British - the scenery, the accents, the humour, ... It is full of stereotypes but it didn't bother me because it is just so funny. I would highly recommended this to anyone who wants to have a good laugh.
i used to watch this show as a kid, but never really understood what they were talking about yet, i found it funny because of the woman's surname-Bucket.funny old bag she is,her hubby's always doing somethin wrong and onslow is just funny too.
This is my most hated series of all time probably, which is weird because I love "Open All Hours", also written by Roy Clarke. It just presents such a thoroughly conservative middle-class point of view, ridiculing people with class pretensions, and shaking it's head at the disreputable poor at the same time. Contains some of the worst working-class stereotypes you will ever see. Puerile.
OMG MRS BUCKET! i ABSOLUTELY LOVED this show when i was a kid, it had to honestly be the greatest thing since sliced bread back then, this is funny witty and down right stupid at times but it really is great and its such a shame its no longer on tv BRING IT BACK!!!
