– Customer review on 12/01/2006 The mini-series that started a trend...
Based on Collen McCullough's 1977 best-selling epic saga. It centres around a Catholic priest and his obsession with Meggie Cleary that conflicts with his ambition to achieve status in the church. Richard Chamberlain is great in his priestly role, and Rachel Ward is beautifully luminous as Meggie, but it's very obviously her first acting role. Barbra Stanwyck is fantastic as the rich-bitch Mary Carson, and Jean Simmons plays a great, stoic Mrs Cleary. The support cast is full of stars - Bryan Brown, Piper Laurie, Ken Howard, Christopher Plummer, Mare Winningham, etc - as it follows the fortunes of generations of the Cleary family in Australia's outback, and Father Ralph's meteoric rise from outback parish to the Vatican.
It has all the ingredients for a great story - love, hate, passion, betrayal, greed, secrets, ambition, sacrifice, birth, death - 465 minutes worth!
Brilliant story, top cast, excellent.
