I loved the idea of this film, taking the popular vampire myth and turning it on its head. The effects and the gore (yes, there's a lot, nearing From Dusk Till Dawn proportions), along with the special effects and cinematography, turned out to be the highlights of this flick. The script, however, left a bit to be desired. Defoe had some memorable one-liners and carried his part off well, but by and large the characters were two dimensional and the acting average, bordering on mediocre. It's worth renting, especially if you're a fan of monsters and the macabre (which I am), but not quite worth the price of a matinée.
