One of the better John Grisham novel adapted law and thriller genre movies. I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan but he does put in a fairly credible performance in this without being over the top. The plot is a bit convoluted with Tom Cruise starring as an ambitious young law graduate from Harvard who joins a law firm partnership in Memphis. The supporting cast is great with Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter and Ed Harris putting in valuable performances. Has to be watched carefully as the plotline twists and turns a bit but quite enjoyable overall.
The movie has a solid script and a great cast to carry it. The lovely Jeanne Tripplehorn, the this time not very grandfatherly Wilfred Brimley, Holly Hunter, always a hoot, Gary Busey, Hal Holbrook and Law and Order's Steven Hill, to mention a few. And Tom Cruise as always doing a powerful job who suddenly realizes that the pot of gold at the end of his and Abbey's rainbow has a HAZMAT sticker on it that he's overlooked. Cruise is just great. A true Hitchkockian character, the average man with no where to run.
What would you do if you found that the company you had waited for all your life was evil from top to bottom? That's The Firm.
Nothing can be better than "The Firm" written by John Grisham, who himself is a lawyer. The attentions to details that Grisham manages to pull are just fantastic. I read the book before watching the movie, and hence can compare and tell that the movie has been directed perfectly and in fact a lot more interesting than the book, as the book gets slow in between, but not the movie.
Cruise's is superb, so are the other actors in this movie. I don't know why people have given negative reviews by comparing it with real life scenarios. This is a movie based on a fiction novel, and as rightly said by one of reviewer here;it does its job by entertaining the audiences.
A thriller from the tremendous story of Grisham, Tom Cruise is a little weak in this movie, but still worth watching. If you like the Grisham books, then best to read it first then watch the film to get the true gist of it. Still worth watching though.
The Firm is a fair movie not nearly as deep or as clever as it seems to think it is however. The darkness is very glossy and primaryily visual. It does try hard however and almost works despite the presence of Tom Cruise but it ultimately suffers for its superficiality masquerading as moral complexity - I mean really. Should have been better.
Extremely intelligent film that is well casted. Initially it appears the film has no substance as a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' conspiracy. Yet as the film progresses, the twists and turns completely blow you away. Tom Cruise is likable as this character and it will appeal to all budding lawyers.
