This is an excellent series, and definitely a notch or two above the average whodunnit. Intelligent writing and uniformly first-rate acting make these episodes stay in the mind long after you have finished watching. I now have all the other series too!

Having recently watched Season One and Two of Foyles War, I thoroughly reccommend this very wellcrafted, extremely well acted and historically interesting series. Michael Kitchen in the lead role is able to convey layers of nuance with the mere shift of an eyebrow. If you enjoy British period drama you will love this.

If you like Foyle's War, currently being repeated on the ABC, and are wondering how it all began, or even if you have already seen Series 1, Foyle's War Series 1 DVD would be an excellent choice. I watched some of the series when it was on TV the first time and loved it. Michael Kitchen, as DCS Foyle is totally convincing in the role: he is thoughtful, tough, extremely polite and has a sense of humour as well. Kitchen would have to be one of the best UK character actors. The stories are evocative of the war years in the UK and are put together wonderfully well. The plots can be quite unexpected in their outcomes, and certainly keep you guessing. I have a number of the Foyle DVDs and enjoy nothing more than settling down to a night in with Foyle, Sam and Milner. You can watch them again and again.

Inspector Foyle is an intelligent patriot, if you like.
A man that would prefer to be fighting a war, along with his son, he is instead tasked to police his area of England, and given he doesn't drive, he gets a young, female army chauffeur to assist.
In wartime there is no end of crime for him to look into, it appears. This is an excellent series, with the quiet but slightly stressed role pulled off by the lead actor done superbly. England is under serious duress with the German forces menacing.
There are not too many police shows, or even period shows of this quality.
Really excellent.
