There has been some great literature written that brings to life those times in Ancient Rome, this was one such book.
But this alone does not guarantee that it will be sucdcessfully transferred to the screen, in this case originally the TV screen. But the answer is a big YES. What a compelling drama series which has you enthralled from the beginning to the end. The acting is sublime a real treat if you have not seen this before and still a treat if you are re-visiting. A classic.

A brilliant series full of brilliant actors. Yes, it is rather static in that it is all filmed on a soundstage and contains no location work. But that is not the point. The point is the acting, the characterisation and the plotting, the intrigue, the betrayal and murder. Gripping all the way, with superb performances from all (Derek Jacobi and Sian Phillips won Baftas). Totally absorbing.
