Synopsis
Love, betrayal, revenge. Strictly Non Fiction. This six part series is a page turning labour of love for real life husband and wife, Wayne Hope and Robyn Butler who wrote, produced and star in The Librarians. Our story begins with Frances OBrien (Robyn Butler Thank God You are Here, Crackerjack), a devout Catholic and highly strung Head Librarian, whose world is turned upside down when she is forced to employ her ex best friend, Christine (Roz Hammond The Micallef Program, Muriels Wedding), who is facing criminal charges and needs a legitimate job fast. Adding to Francess woes is her library staff; an eclectic group of individuals and misfits including a thief doing community service, a paraplegic assistant librarian and a gorgeous, but dyslexic clerk. She is also counting down the weeks to the biggest event of her year Book Week. Directed by Wayne Hope, The Librarians also stars Bob Franklin (BoyTown, The Extra, The Craic), Kim Gyngell (Love My Way, Love and Other Catastrophes), Heidi Arena (Thank God Youre Here, Blue Heelers), Nicole Nabout (Three Dollars, Last Man Standing), Josh Lawson (Thank God Youre Here, Sea Patrol), Stephen Ballantyne ( Eastenders) and newcomer Keith Brockett. Frances OBrien, devout Catholic and panic disorder sufferer, runs a very tight ship at the Middleton Interactive Learning Centre, a modern outer suburban library. Always quick to point out she doesnt make the rules when in fact she does when it comes to her library. Despite the chronic vandalism, the dysfunctional staff and her own particular challenges with the ever growing Muslim community, Frances wears her Head Librarians badge with relish. No more so than during the heady period leading up to Book Week precisely the moment her life suddenly takes a turn for the worse. Francess ex-best friend from childhood turns up wanting a job in her library. Christine Grimwood has been the source of a deep, intense but silent anger in Frances for 19 years, ever since a painful incident at a caravan park. Christine is everything Frances is not - wild, sexy, out on bail and on a mission. She must prove to the Judge that shes a morally sound and upstanding citizen, and the position as Childrens Librarian just might do it. As much as Frances longs to deny her the position, she finds herself forced to hire Christine through an uncanny act of blackmail. In the weeks that follow, Book Week plans unfold with this years celebrations promising to be the most rewarding of Francess career. But with Christine in the library, Frances cant concentrate. Her passive aggressive veneer, usually so effective, begins to crack, not least when she discovers to her horror - that Christine faces serious drug charges. Christine needs to rekindle her friendship with Frances to get what she needs, but in doing so she exposes Francess deep hurt and past mistakes. Long buried feelings begin to spill out, clumsily and madly until Frances is forced to face just why it is that she blames Christine for everything wrong with her life
