Drawn as loosely as possible from Australian history, “NED” is set in the historic town of Glenrowan, where Ned Kelly and his false-bearded gang of thieves spend most of their time hanging about robbing the same bank, with varied levels of success.
Ned’s fellow gang members Joe Byrne, Steve Hart and Dan Hughes are a psychologically motley crew. Joe, an endearing drag queen, saving-up for a sex change, seems to steal more women’s clothing than cash. The violently psychotic Steve, plagued by voices in his head, tries to influence the gang with pop psychology techniques such as “quiet time” in order to quell his own demons. Whilst the cranky syphilitic gang leader Dan is so irritated with his own lack of infamy he is forced to rename himself “Captain Amazing” in order to claim his short-lived place in public memory.
As Kelly’s arch nemesis, hamster-loving Governor Sinclair, tries to track them down, the gang’s serendipitous survival throughout the film is aided by a very strange array of escape tactics and the comic hopelessness of their would-be captors.
Synopsis
The critics agree, NED is a riotous comedy that ties the Kelly legend to a tree, shoots it in the groin and leaves it to die bleeding, like the dog that it is...Sticking as closely to the true history as possible, a teenage Ned (Abe Forsythe) leaves the home of his obsessed rubber farming dad, Mr Kelly (Jeremy Sims), on a quest to become a stage magician. Upon reaching the town of Glenrowan he finds himself part of the "Hughes Gang", a psychologically motley crew consisting of the insecure syphilitic Dan Hughes (Nick Flint), Joe Byrne (Josef Ber), an endearing drag queen saving up for a sex change operation, and the violently psychotic Steve Hart (Damon Herriman).Ned's new found fame as an outlaw brings the unwanted attention of Governor Sinclair (Felix Williamson), an evil man with a maniacal bloodlust, a questionable fetish for hamsters, and a dark secret...NED embraces Australian popular culture and playfully subverts it. Including a talented ensemble cast and a number of special cameos. And Nudge from Hey Dad!

This movie is hilarious. I have never laughed so much ever. It has great acting, affects, dialogue, and especially superb humour – everything you need in a great movie. The movie does have a few scenes that drag out but all in all it’s a must have for all comedy fans and is suitable for basically all ages. Buy it – You definitely won’t be disappointed. Cheers

This is a beautiful little film, touching on the universal themes of friendship, and the corrupting power of money and greed. It was a sleeper back when it was released, but got very good word of mouth. Sure it's sentimental and plays somewhat on stereotypes (I'm assuming, as I've never actually spent any time in a small Irish village), but the cast includes many great Irish and British character actors (especially the late Ian Bannen), and it's funny, well directed, beautifully shot, joyous and ultimately life-affirming. I've seen it with several friends, and they all dug it. The music is also very enjoyable, especially the last song, "The Parting Glass".

love this movie! it is really funny. all written, directed, and acted with by the main guy, who plays ned, so you know that he is one clever cookie. you may recognise him off always greener and an add on tv. this film contains many a funny moment about the life of ned kelly, though perhaps not so historically accurate. good for a laugh with a few friends.

This was an interesting take on the story of Ned Kelly. It basically turned it into a comedy and added in some new ideas of how Ned's life unfolded, which subsequently were added for comedic effect. It felt a bit stupid at times but it was reasonably watchable and I didn't feel cheated when the movie was over. I wouldn't buy it but if it was on TV I'd probably watch it if nothing else was on.
