This is for lovers of classic male chivalry and strong female heroines. Heart wrenching performances with a rare truth about life portrayed by a fabulous cast. If you thought Colin Firth was sexy, Richard Armitage is a must see in this brilliant true to book BBC adaptation. Armitage becomes John Thornton in a way that has you gripping a cushion and crying with angst beside your best friend. He is the character that I have always wanted to meet in real life....A harsh yet hopeful, grittily honest tale that takes you to emotional peaks and valleys and ultimately leaves you completely satisfied.

This is a superb rendering of the spirit of the industrial age and the many facets of class struggle within it. It's also a richly romantic love story. The acting by all the cast is uniformly excellent but Richard Armitage as Thornton is a stand-out. The BBC is well-known for their meticulous attention to detail with locations and costumes. The cinematography is gorgeous and the music is outstanding. This is the best historic fiction on screen I've ever seen.

This series is one that I will watch again and again. A lovely story with beautiful costumes and characters. Adapted from the book of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell, it is set in the industrial area of England in the 1800's. It stars Daniela Denby-Ashe as Margaret Hale and Richard Armitage as John Thornton. I always enjoy the special extras on dvds - interviews and commentaries and deleted scenes. This dvd did not disappoint me. I have lent it to friends and everyone that has seen it enjoyed it.
Highly recommended watching.

I absoloutly loved this double dvd. I don't think todays people realise the hardships they had back in those days. Just to see the reality of the Cotton Mills was an eye opener. And the Beautiful "Love"Story" unfolding to the end was so lovely. Fabulous movie, I'll watch it again- again.

wonderously engaging, passionate and intelligent! what a romance- what characters…!!!!!!!!!!
truly a masterpiece- with comedy, tragedy, social conflicts and heart-wrenching romance.!!! it's fresh and insightful.
Anyone with a soft or broken heart will love and understand this beautiful adaptation of Gaskell's novel by the same title.
Mr Thornton is a god, in his own way, and made even more so by Richard Armitage's personal touch and feeling.

Gritty and fairly honest, this gives a more realistic view of how most people lived back then without romanticising it all and making it pretty. Richard Armitage as the lead is really really good. I don't quite understand why we don't see more of him in movies, etc. I missed a couple of episodes when this was on tv so I wanted to watch it again - I certainly wasn't disappointed, this was money well spent.

I loved this adaptation of Catherine Gaskills famous novel. Never heard of it before and watched all episodes in one evening. Richard Armitage was superb as John Thornton. I would recommend it to all those who enjoy period drama. It is also a lovely romantic story somewhat like Pride and Prejudice.

I absolutely LOVE this adaptation and it was portrayed beautifully. The story is incredibly romantic and a strong sense of the times in those days.
I dear say, how time has changed over the years ... to me .. Men were men and women were strong and sensible I think. There is so much richness in those times and how we have forgotten the way things were. I look around and feel like I should have been born in another time. I think those days were a lot harder than today but maybe I'm too young and ignorant of these things.
Does it do well to dream? I story well done I must say .. and highly recommend it .. this is right up there with Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and so forth.
