A classic adaptation of one of Jane Austen's most admired novels Jane Austen's romantic masterpiece comes to DVD in a thrilling new production from the BBC. At the age of nineteen, Anne Elliot fell deeply in love with handsome young naval officer Frederick Wentworth. But with neither fortune nor rank to recommend him, Anne's family were against the match and persuaded her to break off the engagement. Now twenty-seven, Anne has lived to regret her decision. She has never stopped loving Wentworth, and when he returns from sea having made his fortune and reputation, she can only watch as every eligible young woman in the district falls at his feet. Has he forgotten the girl he left behind? And can he forgive her for listening to her family instead of her heart?
This latest adaption of Jane Austen's wonderful book Persuasion is disappointing in some ways - I felt that the casting for many of the characters was just plain wrong! With the notable exception of Sally Hawkins as Anne Elliot. Hawkins put in an excellent performance. The other major fault was simply that it's too short! 90 minutes is nowhere near long enough to do justice to the book... I know that the book is always better than the movie, but in this case the book is considerably better. But then the book just happens to be Jane Austen's best novel, so even if a film/tv adaption is only a fraction as good as this book, it's still going to be superb...
And this movie is superb at times - the whole thing is beautifully and creatively filmed. And the ending... I was bawling by the time it got to the end.
All in all, a rather lovely adaption of one the great classics of English literature. Probably the only individuals to find to much fault with it will be Janeites like me! And to anyone who has watched this but hasn't read the book - do yourself a favour, buy a copy and READ IT! It is exquisite from beginning to end.
I love this movie, it's such a sweet little story. It sweeps you into all the drama. My sister reckons its even better than pride and prejudice (the new version)! I love the piano music, it certainly makes the movie. All the actors and actresses do a great job. This is certainly a movie I'll watch over and over again. This a movie I would highly recommend to those who are romantic at heart. I would rate this movie as five stars. This movie is definitely worth buying.
If you are looking for a romantic movie for a rainy day then buy this movie. Take the phone off the hook and indulge yourself. The direction can be a little strange at times but the story is oh so lovely. I have and will continue to enjoy this Jane Austen classic.
I loved this story. I haven't read the novel yet, but this definitely inspires me to read it. If you're a fan of piano music, this story is accompanied by some of the best I've heard yet. I would say the music makes the mood of the movie - but the actors do an excellent job as well.
