As a kid I loved The Phamton and looked forward to seeing this film. What a total wast of time. Out of all the film adaptations of comic books this film was a childish attempt at an adult themed comic strip. I fell sorry for Billy Zane who has his name all over this. The action scenes and woeful and the purple jumpsuit, ah ...yea.
Yes, don't waste your time with this movie. Although the storyline is mysteriously intriguing and there are some decent actions sequences, the acting, plot, and humour is corny and overdone. This movie poorly mixes a superhero like character into an unbelievabel story. Too bad for Billy Zane as this left a bad mark on him.
An old-fashioned adventure yarn is the best description of this modern-day comic book-hero-come to life-story. This almost like one of those early Tim Burton directed-Batman type adventures without all the darkness. The language is mild (as it should be in these type of films), the special-effects are decent and the sound is good. Best of all is the scenery, some beautiful landscapes filmed in Thailand and Australia.
Instead of the city being where our comic book hero performs his heroics, this is out in the jungle, more like an Indiana Jones-type story. It's fast-moving, it's hokey, it's unrealistic but its generally fun to watch. Even the villain ("Xander Drax" played by Treat Williams) isn't really all nasty.
The Phantom (Billy Zane) has the normal off-and-on corny romance situation with feminist-journalist (does Hollywood know any other kind?) "Diana Palmer" (Kristy Swanson) and the film gives you an entertaining 100 minutes. It's no award-winner but at least it's something you watch with your kids.
oh man this movie is just so so so lame. and its a real shame because the phantom was such a cool comic book character. ugh ohh well billy zane stars as the phantom in a thoroughly awful film which has a very high camp ratio to it and reminds me alot of the batman movies back in the sixties which were just so funny, but this is just sad and pathetic.
Oh - my - goodness... what an appaaaalling film! Our own Kevin Smith was beaten to the part by Billy Zane, but he shouldn't have been too worried... Zane looks stupid in his bright purple jungle suit (nowhere near as cool as the Ghost-who-walks looks in the comic strip). Lame action, cheesy dialogue, and nowhere near close to grasping the spirit of the original stories... Avoid, please...
Truly awful live action adaptation of the dark and much loved comic strip. All the dark fair is gone and instead we have a guy in a purple jump suit running around pouting. So bad it isn't even camp. All lurid colours and bright daylight no depth or psychological complexity just plain stupidity.
