All eight episodes of the miniseries based on the historical novel by Ken Follett. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of civil war in the 12th century, the series chronicles the building of a cathedral in the town of Kingsbridge and follows the intertwining stories of the people involved in the project, from master builder Tom (Rufus Sewell) to stonemason Jack (Eddie Redmayne). The episodes are: 'Anarchy', 'Master Builder', 'Redemption', 'Battlefield', 'Legacy', 'Witchcraft', 'New Beginnings' and 'The Work of Angels'.
After having read the book (twice), the sequel, I was delighted to have the loan of this video from a friend, and now can't wait to have a copy for my own use. It is a great saga of family life in times we have forgotten, but do well to recall. A must for all family members with great cast, scenery - everything one could wish.
AMAZING production ... if you're a fan of epic-style movies or TV series, or the fantasy genre, or period pieces ... or let's just say pretty much anyone would enjoy this, even my mother did and she's strictly a "Jamie Oliver" or "NCIS" fan!! They've really gone all out to bring realism to it with sets and costumes etc, although at the same time you never really feel like you could 'place' it squarely into any one period of time in world history. They create their own world entirely. Very enjoyable and highly recommended - brilliant casting too.
This series adaption of the book does indeed do it justice and far surpasses expectations. 'Pillars of the Earth' series develops characters and character relationships incredibly well, leaving you wanting to find out more and more after each episode. With excellent acting on all parts this series is a definite family hit with a delightful mix of drama, romance and even a little educative English history thrown in for the kids!
