Pride & Prejudice is a humorous story of love and life among English gentility during the Georgian era. Mr Bennet is an english gentleman living in Hartfordshire with his overbearing wife. The Bennets 5 daughters; the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia. Unfortunately for the Bennets, if Mr Bennet dies their house will be inherited by a distant cousin whom they have never met, so the family's future happiness and security is dependant on the daughters making good marriages. Life is uneventful until the arrival in the neighbourhood of the rich gentleman Mr Bingley, who rents a large house so he can spend the summer in the country. Mr Bingley brings with him his two sisters and the dashing (and richer) but proud Mr Darcy. Love is soon in the air for one of the Bennet sisters, while another may have jumped to a hasty prejudgment. For the Bennet sisters many trials and tribulations stand between them and their happiness, including class, gossip and scandal.

This is a really good version of this story. The movie is sweet, innocient and romantic, set in a time period with priorities much different to today. it is played well by the actors. if you love emma, sence and sencibility or keira, i especially recomended it.
For starters, there is a very grounded nature to the presentation of the story. Some Austenites got their knickers into a twist because they thought it made the family and their circumstances too drab looking. But I loved it! The Meryton Assembly basically sets the stage for this grounded approach-the dancing looks a little heavy footed, the girls look sweaty, and you can't help but think that someone needs to open a window cause it looks awfully sweaty! But at the same time,it made the story come alive, like you were a fly on the wall, peeking in on Lizzy and Darcy and the rest of the gang.
Lastly, I loved the youthful take on the story. I LOVE Firth and Ehle as the '95 leads. They had this chemistry and sensual tension that was electric! But their take was definitely from a mature standpoint-like the way I'd act now as a 33 year old woman. Whereas Macfadyen and Knightley? Theirs is a more youthful, innocent, first love take that I just took to. Great chemistry, Lizzy's a little less cocksure, Darcy's a bit more unbalanced by this attraction, and it felt right in terms of age and stage of development with the actual characters in the book.
Great adaption, brisk storytelling, and a wonderfully irreverent tone by a fun director who knew it was a good idea to knock the pedestal off from under our Lizzy and Darcy, and let them be seen in a more grounded light. And ps-I thought Macfadyen, even though he doesn't have that big of a part, was a great Darcy!
I really enjoyed this movie, but i was disappointed that there were characters missing, of course they couldn't fit it all in but it was disappointing, and a few other niggly things, the acting was great, it was colourful and pleasant to watch not drab and boring like it could have been, though i was slightly disappointed with the ending, never the less i have watched it half a dozen times!
Based on the classic book by Jane Austen. This movie is a great portrayal of that book. Keira Knightly is an amazins Eliza bennet but she does somewhat upstage Jane in beauty. As the second eldest of a whole family of sisters, Eliza is her father's favourite. When a rich bachelor -Mr. Bingley, with his even richer friend in tow, Mr. Darcy, Mrs bennett froths at the mouth at the prospect of having such rich son-in-laws and without abandon pushes her daughter at the two gentlemen. Bingley and Jane fall in love but abruptly Bingley leaves town, and Eliza and the sullen Mr. Darcy seem to be a perfect match; all except for the fact that Eliza can't stand him. But when did the waters of tru love ever run a smooth course (i may have bungled a saying there).
I thought this adaptation was just about as good as the BBC one. I watch it when I can't be bothered spending the time to watch the full BBC one. I normally hate Kiera Knightly, but she was quite good as Elizabeth in this one. Their Mr Darcy is just as good as Colin Firth, but perhaps not as pretty to look at!
I would recommend to anyone who likes this kind of movie, and doesn't want to watch the longer BBC version.
i must say that this movie really does prove that keira knightley can act, and is not just a pretty face, but i stand firm by my opinion that she should not have been nominated for an oscar for the role. this is a very faithful adaptation of jane austin's novel of the same name and is a fun watch
I was expecting to be disappointed in this movie after watching Colin Firth play Mr Darcy in the BBC production. I thought noone else could possibly be Mr Darcy!! But, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Keira Knightley grew on me after a while and in the end, I think she was very good. Though Mr Darcy reminded me more of Heathcliff! - possibly overdid the dark, brooding quality. I think the less polished look of the whole cast in this movie is probably closer to the reality of the time, as the Bennetts were not a rich family. And Donald Sutherland as the long-suffering Mr Bennett was fabulous.
A good adaptation for a Hollywood type version, although I still prefer the BBC version.
They do a great job in this film of compacting a great story into a reasonable amount of time. It is not as good as the five hour version of Pride and Prejudice but then who has time to sit and watch that. Overall I would watch this version over the other, and if you have read the book I think you will still be satisfied with it because the main ideas of this timeless tale are still there.
timeless tale, this is. this adaptation of the classic book is pretty good, keira knightly was cast well, she always seems to give a period piece justice. the man didnt really have as much charm as colin firth when he played mr darcy, but he gave it a good shot. this is a must see for fans of the excellent book.
For what it is (a big-budget movie cramming a novel into under two hours), it is well done. If BBC had never produced a miniseries that Jane Austen herself would have loved, this would be the best rendition out there. (Fortunately for Austen fans, the BBC created a classic). That said, cast did a good job given what they have to live up to, and the earthy rendition of 18th century life in England gave the characters a modern flavour that's easier to relate to, something other Austen movies haven't created. My least favourite aspects of this film are that Knightley isn't that great as Elizabeth Bennet (she comes across more immature than spunky), and the intricate plot movements suffer with the cramped time frame.
