This would be the absolute worst film I have ever seen, and belevie me I have seen some clunkers. To be honest the first time I watched it I fell asleep in the first 1o mins. The lack of colour and use of soft focuses was annoying to say the least. After seening the previews and review I was serious let down.

Not a huge fan of Gwenyth or Jude Law. I thought the cover was more interesting that the film! When mysterious giant robots begin attacking the streets of New York City, intrepid reporter Polly Perkins (Academy Award? winner Gwyneth Paltrow) is on the story and enlists the aid of ace aviator and old flame Joseph "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Academy Award? nominee Jude Law). Their mission is to find out who's behind these killing machines and stop a plot to destroy the world before it's too late.
Iron Man meets Brave New World yet failing. I was quite disappointed.
The plot didn't fit together. Jolie, who usually shines, was cringe-worthy. I struggled to remain attentive and though the entire thing was a waste of all acters talents. If interested in the premise skip to the end of the movie. The weak conclusion is the only redeeming factor.
This is a 2004 view of what a 1930's view of the future could look like. Most of the CGI and blue-screen overlays had to be a tad fuzzy to make the scenes work. The language may be a tad stilted but it also is designed to be a thirties movie rendition.
Seems that somewhere towards the end of the last war a brilliant scientist with a vision disappeared and the whole Group 11 project was disbanded. Today top scientists are going missing and it is up to Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) reporter-photographer to find the reason. Mean while it looks as though a destructive minus is ravaging the city (looking for something) and the only person capable of foiling the evil plot is, you guessed it, Joe "Sky Captain" Sullivan (Jude Law, of "GATTACA" fame).
Eventually Joe runs out of gas and only Franky (Angelina Jolie) can save him if there is time. Meanwhile Polly finds that her camera has only two shots left; can she make the best of them?
How can this daring duo and their pals foil the nefarious plot that may prove fatal to the world as we know it?
You won't find many movies with the look of 'Sky Captain', the film has a style that is all its own.
Apparently set in the 1930s yet featuring technology most of us associate with a time in the 2030s, 'Sky Captain' does a good job of blending the old generation with the new. I really did like the glossy look of the visuals.
The story is not overly deep and I would have loved to see some more backstory development for some of the main players, but for what it is,the plot is easy enough to follow along too.
Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow have great chemistry together here and I'm glad things between them stayed constant through the film. I could write more here, but I won't spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it.
Despite the fact I enjoyed "Sky Captain", I am still thankful these films are the exception rather than the rule. I still prefer films with real (or at least partially real) sets and shooting locations. I've read comments here about the quality of the acting in this film and that's a pitfall for so-called "Blue screen films". Even a great actor has a challenge when standing against a blue screen and pretending to respond meaningfully to something that's not really there. The acting here isn't down right corny, but I believe if the key players had more real surroundings to play off of, the performances would have improved. I also think Angelina Jolie's "Frankie" character deserved more screen time.
'Sky Captain' is an interesting experiment and certainly a movie that will hold your attention for 90 or so minutes (the movie is pretty short in comparison to other blockbusters).
So, if you're curious, check it out, you likely will get something enjoyable out of it.
That was quite a bad movie in my opinion. First off, I’m not a big fan of Jude Law, I just don’t think he’s that great an actor so take that into account when you consider my opinion. Secondly I’m not really into Angelina Jolie so there goes credit in that department. Paltrow? Well I liked her in Shallow Hal…So why did I watch this movie? For the highly acclaimed effects! Never done before! Revolutionary! Boring as hell. The effects certainly did not blow me away, there were no redeeming qualities about this movie at all.
The film captures the feel of a fantasy 1930s comic book / movie serial world a la Biggles & Dan Dare very well - sadly, the plot is just flat out lame. Jude Law isn't very nice at times either to Gwyneth Paltrow's reporter character. It does look great - the mountain scenes of Shangri La are awesome - but, all in all, it is a pretty disappointing movie overall.
The other computer generated and live action movie that unlike Sin City just never quite took off. YEs it looks gorgeous, all misty and elusive and very nineteen thirties, but all the prettiness can't disguise the lack of plot development or motivation or the cypher characters who are walking cliches.
I was really looking forward to this film but it really let me down. The visuals are great and really make you feel like you are in that time and with the flashing newspapers and everything, but the story is just really weak. Angelina Jolie is barely even in the film and the story is just too thin to really advance the pace along, not too great im affraid
