Happily married couple (Nicole Kidman) and Kyle (Nicolas Cage) and their rebellious teenage daughter Avery (Liana Liberto) live with all of lifes creature comforts in a secure, sprawling modern home of glass, stone and steel surrounded by a thick forest.
On a quiet night when Kyle, a successful diamond dealer, is preparing for an evening meeting and after an earlier argument, Sarah is attempting to reconcile with her daughter, their comfortable lives are completely upturned. When two men in police uniform are captured on their front gate security camera seeking entry, Kyle makes them welcome too late to realise that he has actually given access to a group of brutal thugs out to make a big score with the family as hostages.
