Diane Lane plays a San Francisco author whose recent divorce leaves her suffering from depression and a nasty case of writer's block. On the advice of her best friend (Sandra Oh), the 35-year-old woman takes a vacation to the Tuscany region of Italy. She likes it there so much that she buys a villa in the town of Cortona. Her new life becomes even more exciting when she finds love in the arms of a handsome local (Raoul Bova).

Synopsis

San Francisco writer Frances Mayes (Diane Lane) is in a real funk when a good friend offers her ten days in Tuscany. Not wanting to go, Frances summons all her courage and packs her bags. 5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 01/07/2011

this is a fantastic feel good movie that gives you a sense of hope and happiness. You really get to experience the beautiful setting of Tuscany. I have heard people call this a chick flick, but I disagree, it is a feel good movie for all. Yes it is romantic but it also has lots of ups and downs like normal life which makes it so believable. Love it!

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 29/07/2007

this is a gorgeous film in all aspects. the beautiful italian scenery sets the back ground for a truely heart warming story. diane lane is wonderful, but the true star of this film is her pregnant best friend, sandra oh (who of course steals every scene that she appears in) five stars

watch this movie for the appearance of sandra oh, if not for any thing else. she is the thing that makes this movie from merely good and to a gold unmissable flick. the whole setting of the film is gorgeous, it really makes the viewer yearn for the golden hills of lovely italy. a must watch, five stars!

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 22/02/2007

I loved this movie and it is one of my favorite movies. It is set in beautiful Italy and it is truly a wonderful movie. "Under The Tuscan Sun" is romantic in every aspect of the word, It is an inspiring story about spiritual growth, love, heartbreak, life and the ideal of what romance should be and what it really is. I recommend this movie to everyone.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 13/01/2007

The concept that formed the basis of Frances Mayes' acclaimed memoir UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN has been used as a starting point for the development of the storyline for this film. However, this movie is a wonderful illustration of the difficulties of fashioning a film with wide box office appeal from a fascinating book with a devoted but limited audience. I have not read the book but apparently its lyrical and captivating descriptions of Frances' experiences in purchasing and renovating Bramasole, a rundown Italian villa, and of her enjoyment of life in the Italian countryside led the producers to want to capture those experiences on film. However, they decided that they needed more of a story in order to engage the audience, and settled on a backdrop of failed romance contrasted with the enthusiasm of young love as a means of keeping the audience engaged for this almost two hour film. The result is an enjoyable story, some wonderful scenery, several funny lines and incidents but no truly uproarious comedy, a marvelous performance by Diane Lane, but also a relatively formulaic story that never veers too far from the predictable. Yet while attempting to provide feelgood endings for all the various threads of the story, it does fail however to answer the mystery regarding the old man with flowers.

The movie casts Frances as a frustrated writer whose professional existence is as a book reviewer, and this persona is important to the storyline both at the start and also at the contrived conclusion of the film. She becomes despondent when she learns that her husband is having an affair and wants a divorce, and this film traces her progress through the various stages of her emotional journey. It then utilizes the technique of her deciding to live in and renovate an Italian villa which she stumbles upon during a trip to Italy (arranged by her concerned friends) as the source of her eventual catharsis and reaffirmation of life. Her best friend Patti (Sandra Oh) unexpectedly joins Frances in Italy during Patti's final stages of pregnancy when she is deserted by her lesbian lover, and there are romantic episodes involving Frances which provide counterpoint to the budding romance between a young man who is a member of the Polish crew renovating her new home and the daughter of the neighboring Italian family. Finally, there is Katherine (Lindsay Duncan) an intriguing Englishwoman who settled in Italy years ago following a teenage encounter with FE FE (known to the rest of us as Frederico Fellini) that left an indelible impression on her life.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 22/12/2006

This is not the typical romantic comedy... there are many twists and turns of character and storyline. You don't get the simply girl meets boy, fall in love... this movie really tries to capture the complexity of relationships and what might happen in real life (without sacraficing the happy ending, of course)!

It's great fun, very engaging, and has gorgeous scenery to boot. Highly recommend.

Beautifully filmed in Italy's incredible Tuscany and featuring a dazzling cast.

I only rate this 4 out of 5 because it has all been done before. Different place and different people.

3 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 08/07/2007

I enjoyed this movie but it is definitely a movie that will resonate more with the female population than the men. Diane Lane has an irresistable charm that helps greatly to sustain the credibility of this sometimes overlong movie. Sandra Oh delivers a lovely performance as well, playing Lane's best friend and confidante. The scenery is magnificent and a great asset to the movie. A feel good movie with an uplifting theme that should resonate and find empathy with lots of women everywhere.
