My introduction to "The Wire" has been really enjoyable. The realistic dialogue sets the scene well, the character development builds well and the multiple sub-plots are believable.

this is one of the best series going around. Typical high quality from HBO with a great ensemble and strongth, believable story lines. Shows a real gritty view of life on both sides of the fence, the Law and the Gangs. Not what you'd call a great advertisement for Baltimore.

Here's the thing with The Wire; for every good over the top review you can read, there is someone out there who tried to watch the wire and said 'meh.' Why? And why do a whole lot of critics think its the best thing ever made?

The wire has multiple elements. Firstly, its a cop show. Its not a mystery, as you know 'who did it,' but its a cop show, first and foremost.

Secondly, its a seriously gritty cop show, with an eye on the social realities of communities ravaged by crack addiction in the late nineties. This is why it gets so much kudos. Because its not a nice and clean CSI type world, with flash investigators utilising the latest equipment to catch the bad guys. Investigators are hampered by lack of resources, feckless colleagues and office politics.

But the third thing is what never gets mentioned in any review I have seen... and that's this; its is chock full of all male locker room humour. From cutting off a sleeping colleagues tie, to joking about penis size, to the telling of sick stories... don't tell anyone, but while you are getting that dose of gritty serious urban drama, the blokes are also getting some of the funniest locker room one liners ever.

And the whole thing is seriously blokey. An entire scene is shot with two characters saying "motherf$%er" throughout. the lesbian is hot, and the lawyer wears miniskirts and has great legs and dimples.

The Wire is a great series, but the combination of the patois of the streets which is tricky to understand at times, the locker room humour, the obscure motives of the protagonists, and the slow starting plot (its not until episode 3 that we vaguely start getting a plot line) makes it not everyone cup of tea.

Read about this TV series on the net where everybody seemed to be saying it was the greatest TV show of all time.
Well they were right. I can't rate this show highly enough. Everything about is top notch - the plot, the acting, the character development and most importantly the message. It is not easy going at first but stick with it and you will be rewarded.

This is, simply put, the greatest Tv show ever made. Period. Nothing rivals its storylines and characters, its level of detail and depth and broad scope, it is truely fantastic. That said alot of people find the fix 6 episodes dull, but once you get past the build up you are set to be absolutely obsessed with this cinematic masterpiece
