Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[The album] shows off a vocal instrument that smokes the competition. Check out 'Cold Shoulder,' a lover's blues, produced by Winehouse's secret weapon, Mark Ronson..."
Entertainment Weekly (p.70) - "Over crafty retro-soul arrangements helmed in part by BACK TO BLACK producer Mark Ronson, Adele croons lovelorn lyrics in a smoky voice much more mature than her 20 years would suggest."
Q (Magazine) (p.105) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Adele's songs possess an ageless classicism....These are extremely grown-up songs in terms of emotional scope and musical arrangement."
Clash (magazine) (p.62) - Ranked #38 in Clash's "The 40 Best Albums of 2008" -- "[A] mature, heart-stopping collection that defied her years with a gorgeous voice to match."
URB (Magazine) (p.88) - "[T]he acoustic ruggedness of the instrumentation appears significantly well-thought out and certainly matches Adele's heartfelt chops."
Yes, almost all the songs are about love, heartbreak and regrets but Adele's husky soulful voice makes these little details irrelevant. The bass guitar rhythm and the drums compliment her while playing a prominent role in her songs. It says 'pop' but really, that's just the 'poppy' instruments, her voice is another matter altogether.
Her voice speaks to you, whether you've just suffered from a broken heart or just want something special you will understand Adele.
Adele is certainly a female artist to reckon with. She has a unique voice, and the above summary of her genre is accurate. It's a little motown, acapella, but a bit quirky for my taste. It's not an album to relax with. Although most of the songs here are slower in tempo, they're a bit shallow to really get into it properly. Imelda may is my new fave artist. Have a listen to her on Youtube, the biggest hits are Johnny go boom boom, and big bad handsome man. At first she really reminded me of Michael Buble female version, but Imelda has gained enough credit to dub her music, her own. A really fantastic album to gift to any Buble or Gin fan!
