Chicago's Rise Against is a band that remembers the political roots of punk rock. Despite their alliance with a major label, they've maintained their all-important street cred and a dedication to animal rights, not to mention the fundamentals of their melodic sound. Despite their geographic locus, the closest reference point for APPEAL TO REASON is the Southern Cali style pioneered by bands like Bad Religion and The Offspring. The delicate state of America is addressed throughout the album's runtime, with the band comparing the U.S. to the flagging Roman Empire and stumping for social justice on impassioned songs like "Re-Education (Through Labor)" and the acoustic "Hero of War." APPEAL TO REASON is certainly edging ever closer to pop territory, especially on radio-friendly, slickly produced tracks like "Long Forgotten Sons" and "The Dirt Whispered." But still, no one will ever mistake it for The Jonas Brothers--Rise Against is merely growing up.
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.76) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The politics on APPEAL TO REASON are more personal than those of most agit-punk bands. The ambivalent aggro-folk track 'Hero of War,' for instance, draws its lyrics from actual stories Rise Against heard from soldiers in Iraq."
Alternative Press (p.151) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'The Strength To Go On' and 'Entertainment' snarl and growl just like Rise Against songs should..."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.50) - "[A] collection of perfectly formed melodic punk songs about the environment, war and sweatshop practices, while the most powerful song is 'Hero Of War'..."

Rise Against have nailed it yet again with their third major label album. With powerful vocals and a strong political message, Rise Against have created another masterpiece. They definitely aren't afraid to stray a little from their hardcore style and into a slower, more melodic genre, but they also aren't afraid to express their feelings, and express them well.
I give this album 4.5 stars(can't pick it, but 4 is not enough) because RA have only improved from their last release, and improvement is the greatest virtue in a band's music career. However, the only advice I'd have for the band is to not stray too far from their fast hardcore roots. Mid-tempo songs are good, but I have every confidence that RA will speed up their tempos a little on their next release. However, for now, I commend the band because they've still stayed, for the most part, true to their hardcore/punk roots, while also getting great popular reception with Appeal to Reason.

I've been a Rise Against fan for years now, and although this is a bit different from their previous albums, it's still just as awesome. My favorite songs from it are: Savior, From Heads Unworthy, Hero of War, The Strength To Go On, The Dirt Whispered, Whereabouts Unknown, Collapse, and Re-Education (Through Labor), Hairline Fracture, Entertainment, Audience of One, which is basically the entire album, and the other 2 are still great songs. They all have that signature RA sound that you can recognize right away, and Tim's lyrics all have great meaning to them, and I'd say that many of these songs are equal to if not better than a lot of their old material. All in all, definitely buy this album, it'll blow you away.
