It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's 1960s pop period piece to realize that this is a tribute with an edge--nice girls back then didn't sing about boozing and rehab. Since her 2003 debut album, FRANK, Winehouse has been a frequent presence on the gossip pages of the U.K. tabloids, and her songwriting here candidly reflects her experiences with drinking, sex, and drugs.
BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.

Amy Winhouse makes jazz, funk and blues all so easily accessible and enjoyable and the same time by adding twists of her own through her amazing signature husky jazz voice. Other female artists like Duffy and Gabriella Celmi are trying to catch on with this modern jazz sound but of course nobody can do it like the orginal Amy Winehouse can! Everyone's favourite Rehab is on this album and the other tracks are just as funky and smooth. Believe me, she may be small but her voice is as massive as her wicked hairdo! She won like 5 grammys with this album so it's gotta be worth a listen yeah! Highly recommend it, better yet it's a must have essential album in your music collection for sure!
Back To Black is the follow up to Amy's debut success Frank. If you loved that album then you'll love this one too. She's more of a mature songwriter, but still makes no apologies. She's the hardcore (loosely) version of Norah Jones or Corinne Bailey Rae. The beats are fresh and funky. Highly entertaining.
Thought this album was stupid, i did not like one song on it! She really does need to go back to rehab; you can tell she does just through her songs. I must give her credit though with continuing on with her career, she is a very brave girl, needs to out on a little bit more weight and a little less make up though. Also she needs to write a decent song
She may be a little addicted to drugs and alcohol but her other addiction is music. The amount wino has decreased in health and dignity she’s accelerated in talent and music and her music just keeps getting better. Besides isn’t she in rehab now…..so enjoy this cd. Its catchy. A for effort
I'm really enjoying listening to Amy's CD. The music is great and she has a very sultry voice. Read the lyrics and they are really depressing - I feel sorry for her. Anyway, am lovin this CD and am glad I bought it. It's nice to listen to when I'm in the kitchen cooking and/ or cleaning up :)
This album is everything you have been told about, and more. As an easy-listening background to dinner-parties, it's great, or you may decide to listen carefully to the lyrics which often have underlying depth and poignancy.
A must-have clasic album that will survive the test of time.
