2010 will see the legendary Café De Mar celebrate its 30th anniversary. Situated on the island of Ibiza in
the town of San Antonio de Portmany Café Del Mar arguably kick-started the Chillout scene with its
laidback vibes and grooves.
In the 90s Café Del Mar began to release a series of Chillout music compilations with track lists carefully
chosen to reflect the mood and spirit of a sunset by the ocean. In 1994, the first official 'Café Del Mar' CD
was released and today Café del Mar stands as the most respected and highly imitated chill-out music
compilation series, selling millions of copies around the world. Universal Music is proud to present the
critically acclaimed 3rd and 4th volumes together as a 2CD set.
Further volumes are due to be released through the year leading up to the official Café Del Mar
anniversary month of June.Café Del Mar DJ and artist, Jose Padilla curates these volumes and was
instrumental in creating the sound that was to become chillout. For years he had been asked to make
tapes of his hand picked, chilled out and totally eclectic tunes. As he himself says I am always trying to
find tracks which would otherwise be forgotten, or which hold the spirit of Café del Mar.
Eclectic and chilled are the best way to describe these collections. World, folk, dance and rock artists all
feature in the Café Del Mar series. Volumes 3 and 4 feature the usual eclectic mix of great artists including
Pat Metheny, Phil Mison, Nightmare On Wax, Chicane, Stan Getz, Fila Brazillia to name a few.

Tracks very similar in tone. Boring. Stopped CD before finish. Not recommended as travel music.
Although I bought these two disks largely out of curiosity, wondering what the café set were listening to these days, some of the tracks were appealing to my tastes, too. While I'm not a major devotee of electronic music, there is sufficient diversity among these tracks to find some that are worth revisiting. This style tends to lay stress on patterns and textures, reverb effects and so on, but some tracks — Stan Getz's "Street Tattoo", Karen Ramirez's "Troubled Girl" for instance— had melodic appeal as well. Taken as a sampling of electronic music, I was interested to find that children's voices and the sounds of water are still popular ingredients. All in all, though I won't be looking out for Volumen Uno y Dos, I'm happy enough to play these two disks from time to time.
Like all things Ibiza, this particular compact disc pumps. It is a rarified example of taking down the beats to enhance the out put and make a product that is very cafe friendly. Not to the point of being ambivalent, elevator drossing music, but more atmospheric trance, with less of a kick drum but still the same emotion. It offers something for everyone that loves electronic music. Utilised in either the public forum or perfect for late night, early morning entrancement. Guaranteed not to bug the neighbours, except to say that they will covet this lovely double album with intense envy.
