  • When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons came pouring in. Scribes likened their insistent, melodic sound and James Mercer's hyper-literate, oblique but mellifluous lyrics to many mostly anachronistic, all deeply revered sources, including everything from the Beach Boys to Love.
  • The follow-up, CHUTES TOO NARROW, meets and often manages to exceed the tremendous, burgeoning buzz surrounding it. Mercer and co. retain all the elements that made their debut delectable, as the melodies flow hither and thither, a subtle rapture confident in its ability to entrance. Delicately crafted yet explosively poetic lines again abound (such as "secretly I want to bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred"), and by the time the sing-a-long of "So Says I" kicks in, the die is cast. Nestled near the end of the consistently captivating record is the countrified should-be classic "Gone for Good." With its riding-the-rails beat and irrefutable lyrical hook, it seems to sum up the pensive feel of the whole record, "I find a fatal flaw in the logic of love and go out of my head." Such ponderous musings rarely ever sounded so good.

Rolling Stone (11/13/03, p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The Shins...have not only assimilated several decades of Brit rock, chamber pop, and DIY punk but have nonchalantly slipped those influences into their own intricate yet durable musical designs..."

Spin (12/03, p.133) - "...The Shins are reverent and reverential, practically documenting their source material with footnotes..." - Grade: B

Entertainment Weekly (12/26/03-1/2/04, p.140) - Ranked #4 in Entertainment Weekly's 2003 "Records of the Year" - "...[The band is] sharp enough to set Mercer's radiant tunes and keening, affectless voice to the crispest and meatiest of indie rock."

Q (4/04, p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[I]ntelligent, melodic and offbeat - without falling into the trap of being goofy. Have indie rock's saviours arrived?"

Uncut (4/04, p.107) - 4 stars out of 5 - "10 perfect songs constructed from wit, electricity and the broken bones of the heart."

Uncut (p.76) - Ranked #39 in Uncut's "Best New Albums of 2004" - "[With] killer melodies that were as voluptuous as they were wholly original."

Magnet (11/03, p.109) - "...A sonically bolder production with fewer effects and more hooks per square inch than a flyrod factory..."

CMJ (11/3/03, p.9) - "...Making for perfect mixtape material, the quartet now returns with a quieter sophomore effort--one that suits the hunger for a soft, melodic album to provide comfort in the privacy of bedroom listening..."

Mojo (Publisher) (4/04, p.98) - 5 stars out of 5 - "An existential obstacle course. A meditation on the ineffable mysteries of love. An incredible pop record. The second album by The Shins is all this and more....It's a tour de force of concision..."

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 16/04/2007

More great indie pop from Sub Pop Records. Will they change your life? Was Natalie Portman's character in Garden State right? Well, they probably won't change your life but this album, with it's uplifting lyrics and insightful look at life will definitely pick you up. Great melodies, great harmonies, poppy hooks - The Shins second outing is a must have album.

3 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 14/01/2007

this is a pretty average album from the shins, they arent really for me as i find them to be a bit too mellow for my liking, but however this does make for some good easy listening, like before bed time. there are a few stand out songs on here, such as "Turn A Square". the album art on here is stunning.

2 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 23/12/2006

I was very dissapointed when i listened to this album. I had heard a few tracks by the shins which i quite like so i decided i would buy the album. Chutes too narrow has many similar sounding songs and gets very boring and repetitive, especially from the 7th track onwards.

2 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 10/12/2006

meh nope do not get it. the first thing i heard about this album was that it was on Garden state which i liked. but when listening to this album i find myself being rather bored. yes its stripped back folky slash emo style music that has a certain understated charm to it, but overall im thoroughly un impressed, maybe worth a listen but dont expect too much.

Some more fairly bland inoffensive pop here. 'Fallacies in the Language of Love' indeed. They even added some annoying country guitar twang on Gone For good. A sometimes quavering vocalist that I don't much enjoy.

Half a star for the cheesy South Park-Mousetrap cover?

Eminently missable, I think.

You know that scene where that girl from "Garden State" says that The Shins will change your life? Well, they didn't have that effect on me but they certainly provide the kind of music that encourages you to reflect on the more bittersweet aspects of life. This second album offers wonderfully crafted indie-pop and will surely be loved by anyone with a taste for the genre.

wicked cd from the shins, who really are so unique right now, nothing quite like them around. some good tracks on here include kissing the lips. my only complaint would be that it is rather short in lenght. a really nice cd cover too! buy this if you like the shins.

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 18/07/2006

this is the band that go me into so many, if not all, of the indie rock/pop type music i'm into today. after watching the movie "garden state" i was intrigued by their music that i'd heard on the movie. i downloaded afew of their songs and it was enough to make me go out and get their album. its a refreshing change from the music commonly played on popular radio stations and their diverse style of songs keeps you interested throughout the enitre album. the shins = awesome!

The Shins eccentrically titled Chutes Too NArrow is a stunning album that attracted a rash of five star reviews and desrevedly so. There is a wilfull whimsy to the album from the vocals to the skewed lyrics. Its odd but endearing and fresh without affection. Also on the positive side is the fact that its an albumn that you don't get tired of play it and then you want to hear it again and again.
