In the two years following Eric Clapton's appearance at George Harrison's 1971 Concert For Bangladesh, the former guitar god took a sabbatical from playing, due to a number of personal problems. Alarmed at the state that his friend had fallen into, Pete Townshend arranged an all-star concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, where a band that included Ron Wood, ex-Blind Faith (Steve Winwood, Rick Grech) and current Traffic members (Jim Capaldi, Rebop) helped Slowhand play his first live show in two years.
RAINBOW CONCERT, an album of edited segments from the live show, finds a rejuvenated Clapton revisiting his days with Cream ("Badge"), backing Winwood's soulful vocals with some sanctified playing of his own ("Presence of The Lord"), and paying tribute to a fallen comrade ("Little Wing"). On Traffic's "Pearly Queen," the combination of Clapton's guitar with the swirling keyboards and thundering rhythm of the song make for some mesmerizing listening. A year later, Eric Clapton had a comeback album (461 OCEAN BOULEVARD) and a number one song ("I Shot The Sheriff").

Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert is an album recorded live at London's Rainbow Theatre on January 13, 1973, and released within the year. The concert was organised by Pete Townshend and marked Eric Clapton's comeback after the 1971 Concert for Bangladesh. In the year after the Rainbow Concert, Clapton recovered from his heroin addiction and recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard.
A remastered expanded edition of the album was released on January 13, 1995, the 22nd anniversary of the original concert.
A bootleg edition, Eric Clapton and the Palpitations — The Rainbow Concert, 25th Anniversary Edition, was released by the underground label Empress Valley, four CDs of both concerts on January 13, 1973 (the official releases are a mix of songs from both concerts).
This version is certainly better than the old one. Look, if you start something with Layla, and other one doesn't have it, then duh, fairly obvious, why am I telling you? Only problem with having Layla as your first track is that there is pretty much nowhere to go but down!
However, Eric and his guests from no-name garage bands "Who" and "Stones" give it a fair crack with Badge.
There is a fair bit of material here from "Eric Clapton", so if you aren't a Clapton-must-have-everything like some of us, grab this 1995 re-release, instead of the self titled and the original version. Clapton sounds more confident here, and the sound is certainly richer.
No longer being a drug crazed fiend probably helps a lot as well, which was a fair amount of the point of this gig in general. You get some fancy lead breaks, drum solos, and the lot, here.
The versions of Blues Power,Roll It Over,Little Wing,Bottle Of Red Wine, After Midnight and even Bell Bottom Blues are excellent.
I am not that big a fan of Presence Of The Lord or the next couple of tracks, but a top finish to the album with Key To The Highway, Let It Rain and the rockin' Crossroads.
