For 2004's THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED, vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine reunites Megadeth--original guitarist Chris Poland, along with new members, bassist Jimmie Lee Sloas and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta--for the band's first new studio album in three years. Frontman/songwriter Mustaine has a lot on his mind, as he ruminates on many of the political and social ills troubling the world, and his words are delivered over grooves and riffs reminiscent of mid-period Megadeth (circa COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION). The overall sound is fresh and energetic, and Mustaine conjures memorable licks, particularly when he trades blazing solos with Poland, as on "Die Dead Enough" and the fierce old-school thrash of "Back in the Day." Mustaine also spices SYSTEM with a number of extra sonic flourishes--including strings, banjo, and keyboards--making it an unusually intriguing metal record.
Professional Reviews
Entertainment Weekly (p.79) - "Mustaine wisely takes it back to the '80s, teaming up with original axman Chris Poland. That means dual guitar solos....Righteous!" - Grade: B
CMJ (p.22) - "THE SYSTEM HAS FAILED is vintage Megadeth, with smart lyrics coughed up in his trademark gruffness."

A few good songs, a few really bad songs, the riffs and solos are generally good, all the things to make a pretty average album. Daves vocals are a little weaker than usual, but what do you people expect? he is in his 40s. Their second latest offering so far and after this album comes "United Abominations" which in my opinion is their best.
The System Has Failed marks a return from the dead for Megadeth -- and quite a glorious return, it must be said. When bandleader Dave Mustaine was diagnosed in early 2002 with radial neuropathy -- strained nerves in his left arm and hand -- the snarling guitar shredder was forced to disband his once groundbreaking group after nearly two decades of activity.
While i didnt enjoy some songs in the album, i thought Kick The Chair, Black Mail The Universe, Back In The Day, and Of Mice And Men very cool songs, Kick The Chair probably damaged my speakers from overplay of some very cool thrashy stuff, the riffing is undeniable, Mustaine for president.
Yep, bassist Devid Ellefson is missing form this album! Don't know why after so many years he has to leave. But the good news is that the album is actually really rather good. Unlike Metallica who promised to go back to their roots with their latest album, Megadeth has pretty much doen that with this album without making anywhere near as much as fuss! Gotta love it. A great album.
This is a pretty good album. It's Megadeth's thrashiest since Countdown to Extinction, with some good songwriting. Unfortunately, it's also Megadeth's first without longtime bassist Dave Ellefson, and the difference is definitely noticeable to a Megadeth fan. However, it is still a quality release and is not to be missed.
