  • 1982's THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST remains one of heavy metal's all-time classics. Although the British quintet was in the midst of enjoying its first taste of global success, original singer Paul Di'Anno abruptly quit in 1981. Though stunned, the young band wisely agreed to soldier on, making ex-Samson singer Bruce Dickinson their new frontman. Nicknamed "The Air Raid Siren," Dickinson's voice was to become one of the band's most prominent signature characteristics. It also didn't hurt that the band had composed some of its best songs ever, such as the haunting title song, and its first U.K. Top-10 single, "Run to the Hills." Other highlights include the sinister "Children of the Damned," the melodic "The Prisoner," and the album-closing epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name."

wow, my Iron Maiden is really one of those amazing and influential bands that have such a powerful fan base, and for a very good reason, as their music is just incredible. it rises and soars, and you are taken on an amazing adventure that will capture you. the songs on this cd never get old either. the highlight of this albam would have to be "the prisoner"

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 05/01/2007

This album's influence on metal as we know it is incalculable for when Maiden came together with Bruce Dickinson the planets aligned and the soul-searing rhythms and solos of the band were merged together with Bruce Dickinson's sonic vocal range and power causing tremors around the world. This album is sheer brilliance... rarely will you find an album that you'll listen to for the first time just to find it is one of the greatest things you have ever heard. It's fast, it's heavy, it's melodic, it's epic and above all, it's intelligent. The songs on this album are forged so perfectly that you can't mistake it for anything but pure genius. This is most likely greatly due to the work of Martin Birch, the greatest producer that has ever lived. Period. The production values on this album are stellar, making the superior songwriting sound even better than it is.

There's nothing more to say. You MUST own this album, don't even bother checking out what it sounds like... JUST BUY IT AND LISTEN DAMN IT!

The Number of the Beast spawned a pair of all-time classic metal anthems — "Run to the Hills" (which dealt with the plight of the American Indian) and the demonic title track (which caused controversy among religious groups, who wrongfully labeled the band Satan worshippers). But, like its predecessor, not a single weak track is included — "Invaders," "The Prisoner," "22 Acacia Avenue" (a follow-up to 1980's "Charlotte the Harlot"), and "Gangland" were all rocking highlights; the quieter "Children of the Damned" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" were also featured. The Number of the Beast is quite simply one of the best heavy metal albums ever released.

Bye bye paul diano after just 2 albums, wlecome to stardom bruce dickenson, who has been the vocalist since this album (except for 2 albums around 95 where they had blaze), absoultly stunner of an album, the number of the beast (the song) is one of iron maidens best ones and then there is run to the hills which every maiden fan loves, this is a must have album

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 02/09/2006

This album is Iron Maiden's 1982 release, this album has Bruce Dickinson on vocals, not Paul Di'Anno, and is probably Iron Maiden's most notable album.

The album starts off with "Invaders", which is about a viking invasion, though the lyrics are not that powerful and may be just mediocre, there is no denying the instrumentation, catchy riffs, fast tempo, and a brilliant vocal style by Dickinson ensures this album is really something, an excellent opener as usualy by Iron Maiden. The production is really good.

"Children Of The Damned"; based on a movie 20 earliers before the album was made, takes a step back in the tempo, a clean intro, more melodic and we are introduced to Dickinson's clean vocal style, the lyrics are well thought and written, the guitars accompany very well, nothing very technically out of the ordinary, but the song has a very vintage feel and the song exemplifies a slow song that every heavy metal album must have.

"The Prisoner"; this song is based on a movie too. The introduction is a dialogue from a part of the movie, this songs sets the album back into a heavier mode now, the drum in the introduction and pre verse has a very jungle like beat that brilliantly sets the mood for the album. The song does not make a very good impression in the verse, but the chorus rescues it, Dickinson's operatic voice lifts the chorus up and has us wishing the chorus was made longer.

Dont forget to visit "22 Acacia Avenue", this song is probably my second favourite in the album, its about a brothel close to where they used to live, Dickinson's voice so enchantingly completely mesmerizes us in this song, the guitar, bass, drums and the song structure is brilliant. "MEEET A LADDYYY THAT III KNOW". Where would we be without Dickinson's singing style?

"The Number Of The Beast"; the title track, its got a very creepy introduction as someone reads out a part of verse from the Bible, just from the guitar introduction and Dickinson's whispering/partly echoing voice we know this song is gonna be a killer, the rhythm slowly builds up layer after layer, and is a very popular song by Iron Maiden, and then his bloodcurdling scream + a few seconds of guitar and drum rhythm leads it on to a pounding bassline + highly rhythm oriented guitar riffs. The chorus is operatic as usual, Dickinson announces it powerfully... "SIX SIX SIX, THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST, SACRIFICE IS GOING ON TONIGHT", the song has a fairly happy feel, so dont be frightened...guitar solos are just so beautiful, it sounds like it has got a touch of wah-wah, but you have to hear it, to fully appreciate, the song goes from strength to strength and is heavily strengthened in the middle.

"Run To The Hills"; enter another famous song, this is probably what got all the non maiden fans taking a second look at the band, very catchy riff, sounds more like an opener, this is why its so good! Though the video was a bit cheesy, it was fun to watch, and the song's drumming(introduction most notably) and guitar riffs and ofcourse the guitar is as orgasmic as can be.

"Gangland"; while many have shown their dislike for this song and the following song after this, carefully listening to it, will show its not bad at all, definitely Maiden, but after the 3 awesome songs before, its very mediocre. Definitely check it out though, got an interested slushy melody at about 2:20

"Total Eclipse"; probably better than the previous song, got a more interesting structure and got a haunting feel. Probably hints to us at what is about to come up. Nothing much to say on this song, but definitely check it out! It's not bad at all, a bit dreamy...

"Hallowed Be Thy Name"; where can i start? where can i end, this is probably Maiden's BEST Track, written by none other than our Steve Harris, legendary bassist and song writer, Harris shows us his song writing talents truly in this piece, and ofcourse many times before and after, but this song really stands out, Dickinson must be accredited for his haunting vocals that so powerfully capture the thoughts of a man just about to be sent to the gallows to be hung. Why stop there? The guitars are perfect, not overdone, lets the vocals take over where appropriate. Production quality could not have been asked at a more better time, for a song like this, everything is important, even the time of recording! The bass you hear subtly pronouncing itself, guitar harmonies kick in, Dickinson holds his voice "running loooooooooooooooooooow", and the ever remembered main guitar harmony enters, then the song gets heavy, hell breaks as loose, as drums guitar, bass, vocals just thunder in, crank up your volume, cause this is not a song you play in the background. This song will never be forgotten(hopefully)

This is an awesome album by Iron Maiden, definitly my favourite studio album, from start to end this album has great heavy old school riffs, Iron Maiden always stuck to their roots and continued to pull out great albums, my favourites were Children Of The Damned and Number Of The Beast andRun To The Hills

Is this reviewer below me joking?

Iron Maiden are awesome and this is one of their best albums. It's everything that makes heavy metal awesome, it's fast, it's heavy, it's catchy, the lyrics are extreme cheesy, the solos are awesome, the vocals are at their best, the drumming is good and the guitar riffs are great.

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 11/05/2006

This album is one of the best know iron maiden, or heavy metal in general albums in existance. This is a a good album, but also becomes extremely irritating after a few listens, it is safe to say that this is the most mainstream and generic of the maiden albums. Nothing seems up to par on this album in comparison with previous classics, but this is still something all metal fans need intheir collection
