Iron Maiden issued its fifth release, POWERSLAVE, in 1984. It was a time in which the band had become a worldwide arena-headlining sensation. The album was also the first to not have been marked by a lineup change, helping Maiden produce another metal classic.
While most other metal bands of the era were still singing about partying, Maiden continued to tackle some serious, thought-provoking subject matter. The band addresses the threat of nuclear war on "2 Minutes to Midnight," World War II-era fighter pilots in the album-opening "Aces High," and the demise of an Egyptian king in the title track. But the true highlight is the long and winding 13-and-a-half-minute epic "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," a track that does a great job of recreating the haunting imagery of the Samuel Taylor Coleridge tale. Once POWERSLAVE was released, Maiden undertook one of the longest rock tours in history, playing from August 1984 through July 1985.

"Poweslave" is classic Maiden right down the line. With classics like "Aces High" and the epic "Rime of the Ancient Mariner", this CD is one that sets the bar. The songs are all excellent stories, with tight music, good vocals and an overall polished sound that does not detracte from the metal that it is. This is some of the best Maiden availabe...period.
It was the first Maiden album to feature the same lineup for more than a single record, and with a long tour under their belt, the band's playing on Powerslave was tight and inspired. While other popular metal bands of the day were busy conquering radio with accessible singles, Maiden decided to include several noncommercial extended pieces, a throwback of sorts to their '70s prog rock influences (Jethro Tull, etc.). MTV embraced the album's two singles/videos, the rapid-fire "Aces High" and the complex antiwar tale "2 Minutes to Midnight,"
This is one of those great albums from the great iron maidenm their fifth release and 3rd with good old bruce dickenson as the lead vocalist its just ana amaziong album, its not my favourite of the albums but its far from the least favourite, with great songs like 2 minutes to midnight and aces high this is a album wirth owning
I think this album is their best, tied with "A Matter Of Life And Death".
This means... AMOLAD was their best album since 1984!
Aces High - Wow, a brilliant opener, for 1984, and for heavy metal at that time, Maiden was on their way to the top. Guitars, guitars, guitars, the harmonies are so vintage sounding, the vocals on this track probably helped Dickinson get his signature "air raid siren" title, the bassline is chugging along, and I must say the production is AWESOME, whether it be 1984 or 2006, production quality like this shows some talent!
The Duellists - wow, Dickinson can rap! joking, hell if rappers could do this, i'd at least start listening, Dickinson proves to be more and more versatile as a vocalist, he is world class, and what's better is, more than 20 years later, he still delivers! God bless Dickinson!
Powerslave - Epic, haunting, ancient, harmonious, riffy, demanding, enchanting, there are so many ways you can describe this title track, i must say you have to listen to the solo by dave murray on this, it goes from slow to fast, with a harmony bit with Adrian Smith and back to a kickass solo to end it.
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner - probably 90% of the maiden fan's favourite on this album, while not my favourite, i really really like this song, if i had to listen to one maiden song for the rest of my life, it would be this, why? its progressive, always interesting the listener, a true epic, which tells us something which we can interpret in many different ways, and there is no denying the guitar riffing once again.
About the other songs, listen to them, they are just as good, though i must say Back in the village was one of the downers on this album, but it wasnt bad, but not the best by Maiden, i believe the song was a successor to "The Prisoner" from TNOTB album.
This album is absolutely amazing, one of Iron Maidens best, with great guitar riffs, good vocal range, awesome guitar solo's (some of the best I've heard), great lyrics and good drumming. Any fans of heavy metal need this album, there is a real emphasis on guitar skill here. Anybody wanting to check out Maiden should probably get this album first.
Powerslave, yes, that word brings joy to my heart. why?, you might ask. Well, it's all because of this album, a true jem of metal. This album my the legendary Iron Maiden might possibly be one of the best albums i have ever heard. The riffs are fantastic, as are the vocals, bass and drums. The solos are awesome, the lyrics... genius especially in the song "Rhyme of the ancient marriner" the band really shwo their tallent.
You seriously fail in the world of heavy metal if you do not own this album. Bruce Dickenson is one of the best vocalists in the world and this album alone is proof of it. Inlcuding my favourite Maiden song two minutes to midnight, this is a must for any fans of rock. The vocals are great, the guitar solos rule, the drums are good and the riffs are very original.
This is great, yet extremely over-rated. It is still very good though, with powerful hits like "2 Minutes To Midnight" and "The Clairvoyant". The solo's in this album are great, the music is great (especially the guitar riffs). The drumming is good and Bruce Dickensons vocals have never sounded better.
Oh my god, this CD has to one of the best Iron maiden CD's around. Opening with the extremly god like track of Aces high (which really kicks off a good CD with some style) this CD will leave you with Bleeding ears (beleive me, with metal bleeding ears are good) as it works its way to the climax with Rime of the ancient Mariner. In my opinion, if you dont have this CD you dont love metal as much as you may claim to.
