On the heels of the unusual MUSIC FROM THE ELDER, Kiss decided to return to their hard rock roots with CREATURES and the result is their heaviest-sounding album to date. Unfortunately, Ace Frehley (frustrated by his diminishing role in the group) departed the band prior to recording. He was replaced by Vinnie Vincent, who contributed some lightning-fast riffs.
From the monstrous drum fill that opens the record, it is clear that the grease painted warriors mean business. The title track is a classic Kiss number with a "take no prisoners" punch. "Rock And Roll Hell" is a tale of a musician's excessive lifestyle (loosely based on Frehley). "I Love It Loud" is a Kiss anthem for the ages, with a pounding drumbeat and a sing-along chorus that had 200,000 Brazilians screaming in unison on the CREATURES tour. "I Still Love You" is a powerful, emotional ballad featuring Eric Carr on bass. "War Machine" closes the album and is Gene Simmons at his ferocious best, a killer track that leaves the listener spent at its completion. CREATURES shows a focused Kiss, a straight-up hard rock record that takes the listener through a riveting journey.
The jacket cover on your website was a little misleading. The photo doesn't match the cover phot on the cd sent out, even though it's the correct item. Why th difference in apperance from what's on the site??
It is the band's 14th studio album and the last for Casablanca Records, the only label the group had ever recorded for up to that point. The album was also dedicated to the memory of Casablanca founder and early Kiss supporter Neil Bogart, who had died of cancer during the recording sessions.Creatures of the Night was certified Gold on May 9, 1994, when it sold 500,000 copies.Three different covers of this album exist: the 1982 original issue, the 1985 reissue (featuring Bruce Kulick, and the band without makeup), and the 1997 remastered version (same photo as the original, but with variations in the logo and lettering).
Vinnie Vincent could never produce licks like Ace Frehley, who in my opinion, was essential to the original sound that the fans loved and wanted. They lost the Gibson sound that was what made them sound like they did in previous album, and played around with other guitar sounds. There is not much going for this record - for fans only wanting to complete their collectiong - lacklustre.
