Performer Notes - Tool: Danny Carey, Paul D'Amour, Maynard James, Adam Jones.
- Additional personnel: Henry Rollins (vocals).
- Recorded at Grand Master Studios, Hollywood, California.
- UNDERTOW is an example of nimble heavy metal in the angtsy/artsy tradition of Jane's Addiction. Tool favors medium tempos, which gives several of the group's songs a modern-day Black Sabbath feel, but fortunately lead singer Maynard James mostly steers clear of the usual quasi-operatic yowling favored by most metal frontmen--he's a remarkably expressive singer in a genre not usually so noted. As for the band's world-view, it's pretty much summed up in the unsentimentally named "Prison Sex": "Do unto others, what has been done to you."
Professional Reviews Spin (10/03, p.107) - "...One of the least likely MTV smashes of the grunge era, and one of the most enduring..."
Entertainment Weekly (5/28/93, p.66) - "...What puts this L.A. band a notch above the rest are better songs and the hints of vulnerability in singer Maynard James Keenan's voice..." - Rating: A-
Entertainment Weekly (12/31/93, p.116) - Ranked #10 in Entertainment Weekly's list of `The Best & Worst Records Of 1993' - "...[a] gristle-free slab of clenched-teeth metal...."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.53) - "Raw, scathing and often deeply troubled, UNDERTOW is the sound of the tormented human soul..."

– Customer review on 22/07/2007 The album “undertow” is the precursor to the later and greater two albums “Lateralus” and “10,000 years”. You can clearly see Tool’s progression in this album, from pure hard rock into the more complex music of their last two albums.
I myself consider this album to be one of the least of all of Tool’s albums, but on the other hand it contains one of my favourite Tool tracks “sober”.

– Customer review on 15/05/2007 Like all of Tool's work, Undertow pushed and exceeded the previous boundaries within the rock or metal genre. A heavily distorted grungy sound, combined with the insane drumming of Danny Carey and Maynard's incredible voice make Tool a cut above the rest. Of particular note are the tracks Prison Sex, Sober, Swamp song and 4 degrees. While each album tool has released has had a slightly different style all are brilliant, and are all quintessential albums for the rock fan.

– Customer review on 01/02/2007 This album was the one that really opened peoples eyes to Tool, and quickly established them as one of the best metal bands of all time. Great lyrics and challenging music that explores all sorts of different time signatures. One of those bands that just seems to get better with age. Brilliant.

– Customer review on 13/11/2006 Undertow is your stereotypical fresh out the box metal c.d. compared to opiate this is more like what you would expect the old tool to sound like. heavy guitar solos, medium length songs, more catchy sounds, and maynard is totally beginning to let his voice take the world by storm.

– Customer review on 19/05/2006 A very unique cd, by a very unique band. Progressive metal with a hint of heavy grunge. The lyrics are really good and the song names are funny. Any Tool fans need this album, it's one of their most important. Good songs like "Prison Sex" and "Sober" make this an album worth getting for anybody.

– Customer review on 30/04/2006 Sober is one of my favourite songs, a very well known album, this is a very decent cd. Tool are one of my favourite bands and the song Prison sex (off this album) helped get me into them. The vocals here are great, the lyrics are spiritual, the guitar riffs are heavy and the drumming is really good.

– Customer review on 25/04/2006 This is an awesome cd! In my opinion its not tools best yet but it is still great. It has some of my favourite tool songs on it such as sober and prison sex. One of the songs Disgustipated is really strange but still good you just have to be a tool fan to get it. Maynard sounds great as usual his voice is so original. And Dannys drumming is just amazing as usual hes got to be one of the best drummers in the world. And as for Justin and Adam are awesome as usual.
