  • Editors: Dana Nielsen; Jason Lader.
  • Many rock bands talk endlessly about their "sound," refining a basic formula until it's either perfect or perfectly boring. System of a Down, however, developed a loyal fanbase with the opposite approach--the group mixes genres so freely that describing what their music sounds like is nearly impossible. Sure, SOAD is, at its core, a metal band, but on MEZMERIZE's first two songs alone, vocalist/guitarist/mastermind Daron Malakian and crew zigzag their way though Beach Boys-like stacked vocal harmonies, Anthrax-esque hardcore thrash, Cameo-style funk, and prog rock of a CARESS OF STEEL-era Rush variety. "Revenga" adds a touch of swooping Freddie Mercury vocal drama to the mix, while "Sad Statue" sports a guitar riff that sounds like a Greek bouzouki. Even sharper, tighter, and more ambitious than System of a Down's previous albums, MEZMERIZE makes for a consistently surprising listen.

System of a Down's softest album thus far, but still a corker. Lyrically, they might be a bit simple (at least they lean to the left), but musically, they're in as good form as they were on their debut album. Single 'B.Y.O.B.' is probably the heaviest song, other highlights being 'Cigaro' and 'This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm On This Song', mixing hard rock with Middle Eastern and Eastern European folk respectively. A very accessible album to metal and alternative fans alike.

The first half of a two part album, Mezmerize has all the sound and themes of their previous releases. Despite being a great album, a lot of the fans saw this a System of a Down selling out. Whether or not this is true, Mezmerize makes for one great album, and shouldn't be passed up on.

this is one of their lesser known albums, but man it is so amazing! this is a real must own, and i reckon its pretty underrated for some reason, as its got so many awesome songs on it, such as byob, violent pornography, this cocaine makes me feel like im on this song, and so many more! man i really crave a listen to this, its amazing, and a real must own for anyone!

While System of a Down may seem like just another rock/metal band to some people, there is much more behind their great music then that I personally love their great lyrics an the amazing way that they get your heart racing. The album Mezmerize has more use of their guitarists (Daron Malakian) voice, which I think, is just the thing they needed for this great album. Some moving songs include: B.Y.O.B., Violent Pornography and Lost In Hollywood.

byob... thats what brought system of a down back into the trash metal scene. this album is annoying... in a good way... every song is designed to sing along to which is awesome. some pretty rough lyrics every now and then but the tunes on this c.d are awesome. i really should listen to the newer album too if it was as good as this one.

wicked System of a Down album, quite short however. starts with a really nice intro, then kicks into the ever powerful BYOB, bring your own bombs. some really powerful politcal mesages are on this album, acompanied by some killer beats and vocals.a must have for any system fan.

This is another fantastic CD by System of a Down, who never fail to deliver in quality, unique music with a political and social edge to it. Many of the tracks are catchy, and all of them are good. This is probably not as good as some of their other albums, however it still deserves a listen to, as the unique lyrics really are amazing!
