Performer Notes - Personnel: Grant-Lee Phillips (vocals, various instruments, programming); Carmen Rizzo (programming).
- Producers: Grant-Lee Phillips, Carmen Rizzo.
- MOBILIZE, from 2001, is the second official solo album from Grant Lee Phillips, who was the driving force behind 1990s alternative rockers Grant Lee Buffalo. His recordings under his given name are even more spare than the mellow modern rock of his band.
- CD contains 2 bonus tracks.
- For all his pop instincts, Grant Lee Phillips is ultimately a folk-rocker at heart (hell, he was even the "town troubadour" on TV's GILMORE GIRLS), which is what makes MOBILIZE such a striking anomaly in the singer/songwriter's discography. While he hasn't abandoned his six-string, Phillips leaps into the digital world, adding layers of electronics and programmed rhythms to his sound. It's a testament to the strength of his vision that the production never overtakes the songs, and in the end, MOBILIZE feels more or less of a piece with Phillips's more acoustic-oriented recordings.
Professional Reviews Q (4/02, p.119) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...MOBILIZE is the album that always seemed beyond his [previous] group. The dreamy, elegiac opener, 'See America' is gorgeous..."
Alternative Press (10/01, pp.92,94) - 7 out of 10 - "...Songs that wade through the waters of heartache to reach pop's redemptive place..."
Magnet (9-10/01, p.106) - "...Another splendid solo album..."
CMJ (7/23/01, p.4) - "...Largely guided by Phillips' husky, golden tenor, which coos and harmonizes across these tunes with near-cinematic granduer..."
