  • Like Soul II Soul a few years before them, Portishead spearheaded a revolution in both pop and dance music by introducing a distinctive new groove. Portishead was at the vanguard of the '90s trip-hop onslaught, and after a three-year respite, they return with a self-titled second album to reclaim the trip-hop crown. Beth Gibbons is on her way to becoming the Billie Holiday of electronica, retaining a stoic, laconic tone while recounting tales of despair and emotional upheaval.
  • The lazy, spacious beats that are the band's trademark provide just the right combination of urgency and tranquility to underscore the emotional contradictions at the core of Portishead's music. Adrian Utley's delightfully creepy guitar and keyboard work adorns the proceedings tastefully and effectively. While Dummy is often named one of the best albums of the 90's (and rightfully so), Portishead's second album is still somewhat underrated. The basic Portishead sound remains intact, dreamy soundscapes, deep, echoing bass, shimmering guitar lines, haunting and eerie melodies and Beth Gibbons' distinctive wail of anguish. Portishead's self-titled album, however, expands on the range of Dummy, showing the group's willingness to push forward, while not necessarily bettering their previous efforts. The churning guitar and heavily treated drums of opener "Cowboys" have a clear precedent in the excellent "Sour Times" from Dummy but the track maintains a more aggressive mood not seen from the band before. "Cowboys" is followed by the excellent "All Mine", a clear push forward from Portishead's established sound, featuring bright, punchy horns and a wistful melody disguising a darkly obsessive lyric. Throughout the rest of the record, Portishead manage to keep their signature sound, while complementing it with sonic studio trickery, such as the constant electronic phasing of Gibbons' voice (seen best at the climax of "Half Day Closing") and sampling their own original music, adding to the dream-like haze. The band also keeps the compositions interesting with soft additions like hauntingly beautiful acoustic guitar, keyboards and trumpets. Overall Portishead is an excellent record, and a worthy addition to the collection of anyone with even a passing interest in the Bristol sound.

The wondrous follow-up to 'Dummy', Portishead's self-titled debut is just as good as their previous effort, and sounds even darker in parts. The highlight is their best song 'Only You', but just about every track shines, 'Mourning Air', 'Elysium' and 'Over' are all worth a mention as well. The samples are more varied this time around, and it's a shame they didn't follow this one with a remix EP as well.
