Performer Notes - Personnel: Jack Jackson (vocals, guitar); Merlo Podlewski (bass); Adam Topol (drums, percussion).
- Recorded at Mango Tree, Hawaii.
- Something of a slacker renaissance man, prototypical mellow surfer-dude Jack Johnson is not only a BILLBOARD-charting recording artist, but also a world-champion athlete and award-winning documentary filmmaker. On his second full-length album, ON AND ON, the sandy-toed singer/songwriter delivers a bare bones set of acoustic folk rock as soft and soothing as the Hawaiian breezes that serve as his inspiration.
- As on his debut disc, BRUSHFIRE FAIRYTALES, Johnson serves up a groovy, yet slightly melancholy stew in his trademark breathy voice, which at its best recalls everyone from Steve Miller to Chet Baker to Evan Dando of The Lemonheads. This time around, however, the vocalist/guitarist isn't afraid to gently stir pinches of reggae, hip-hop, and Harry Belafonte style pop-calypso into his usual hippie jam-band roux. Mario Caldato Jr.'s ultra-sparse, live-sounding production carefully reveals the subtle sadness that lurks behind even Johnson's poppiest tunes, making ON AND ON the perfect album for a midnight beach party on the last night of summer vacation.
Professional Reviews CMJ (5/12/03, p.9) - "...ON AND ON is full of stripped-down, intimate numbers, with Johnson and his trusty acoustic guitar making the songs' soft-spoken points in laid-back and bluesy setting....Introspective, low-key rock..."

No idea whether he was any good at surfing, but he should have stuck to it other than to infect the airwaves with this boring monotone crap.
An aural displeasure that will have you running into oncoming traffic just to get away from it.
On & On truly lives up to it's name as the album goes On & On, as does the droning boring tones of this non musician.

Ex-Surfer Jack Johnson delivers another cd of his trademark laid back acoustic guitar music. This is his second cd that he released and is more relaxed and refined sounding than hi debut cd Brushfire Fairytales. The hit track on this cd is "taylor" and he also includes a recording of the song "rodeo clowns" which he originally recorded with "G-Love and Special Sauce" and became a hit in the US.

Wow man. This album is slow laid back and mellow. If you want too relax in the sun put this album on. It is so warm and ambient. It's not as good as his first album but still great. Stand out tracks include holes to heaven and traffic in the sky. Diffinitely worth having in your collection

awwwwful album. jack drones on and on, much like the album title suggests. man i cant stand this mix of lulling surfer tunes mixed in with dull vocals, that are sure to put you to sleep if you are feeling remotely tired. the only song i can remotely stand on here would be taylor. gag, man i hate this album, it is just so boring!

This was the third Jack Johnson purchase of mine, and it is my personal favorite. A common criticism of his work is that all of his tracks sound the same, but out of his first three albums, this one has the most variety. His guitar style is both soft and catchy at the same time. "Times Like These", "The Horizon Has Been Defeated", "Taylor", "Wasting Time", "Holes to Heaven", and "Tomorrow Morning" are classic tracks.
Overall, the album is both upbeat and mellow. If slower music puts you to sleep, this isn't for you. I could pull up the cliché that this music as great to "chill" to, but this goes without saying if you've ever heard Jack before. If you haven't, however, this is a great place to start.

This is a CD that will make you want to quit your job, move to Hawaii, take up surfing and never wear a pair of shoes again. It's laid-back and naturally free-spirited on first listen, but when it becomes a close friend amongst your CD collection, you'll notice that there is deep meaning and social commentary in the songs. So buy this CD if you want to be taken somewhere else in your mind, but gain a better understanding of the world around you at the same time. Jack's playing is sublime, though he sounds like he isn't even trying, and will make you smile each time he has the whimsical notion to wrap a complicated fill or lick around your ears.
A really great album.

Jack Johnson is good at what he does but ultimately bores the hell out of me because he just wants to be so cool all the time. The album has the feel of hanging out at some South Californian beach all day and night which for some reason gets old very quickly. As far as the technicality and his vocal style goes? Good enough. If only he could use his skills for good instead of evil.

Love jack, he's got some solid talent. Its real good to just flick on when studying or chilling out. This music always cheers me up when im in a bad mood, and jack johnson is pretty much my favourite artist. Lots of people reckon his music "is all the same" but i don't mind cause its real good stuff.
maybe my favourite one of his... this and in between dreams

argh, yet again jack jonhson manages to make a deathly boring album! how does he do it, im not too sure. all i know is that this album is hell unless you WANT to be put to sleep. no variety, boring songs, and lack lustre singin make this album unbearable. and with heaps of tracks, it really DOES go on and on.
