The Pixies: Black Francis (vocals, guitar); Kim Deal (vocals, slide guitar, bass); David Lovering (vocals, bass, drums); Joey Santiago (guitar).
Additional personnel: Karen Karlsrud, Corine Metter (violin); Arthur Fiacco, Ann Rorich (cello).
Recorded at Downtown Recorders, Boston, Massachusetts.
From the opening bars of DOOLITTLE, the Pixies' brilliant duality comes into focus. Chiming guitar streaks waft over an AOR-ready riff, while vocals bark out references to a deliberately obscure culture. "Debaser," for instance, finds singer/songwriter Black Francis alluding to "Chien Andalou," Spanish director Luis Bunuel's surrealist film renowned for a scene where an eyeball is sliced.
The Pixies' calling card is their calculated sonic mayhem. Francis and bass player Kim Deal weave vocal harmonies of inimitable dissonance as guitarist Joey Santiago's leads ring like air-raid sirens. DOOLITTLE perfectly captures The Pixies' refusal to be categorized into one form of musical identity. The album's most gorgeous melody is wrapped around the words "cease to exist, giving my goodbye," and crowned with the title "Wave Of Mutilation." The rest of the album follows suit, and even the love songs bear Francis' warped humor, boasting titles like "Tame" and "Dead."
DOOLITTLE is quintessential Pixies. Unflinching in their abrasion, the group created some of the best, most intriguing rock music of the early 1990s.

This is in my opinion, the Pixies best album. This album is that really got me into the Pixies. They have such a simple yet effective sound with songs that are bound to get stuck in your head. Some stand-out tracks on this album include: Debaser, Hey, Monkey Gone to Heaven and Gouge Away. This album is a must have for Pixies fans and is also a great introduction to the band for those who don't really know them.
The Pixies are a band of contradictions. Melodic one moment, discordant the next. Loud and soft. Exact and vague. "Doolittle" is all of these things at once, from the pop of "There Goes Your Man" to the crunch of "Gouge Away". Just as good as "Sufer Rosa" and much better than "Bossanova" and "Trompe le Monde" - while all albums are essential, "Doolittle" is the pick of the bunch.
man this is such a good album and am actually quite surprsied that theres only two reviews so far. anyways this is the album with there most well known songs apart from where is my mind. this is just a great record with not a single bad track, so grab it and then buy surferrosa and then buy come on pilgrim which is also another great album.
After a massive once through only - an album of two halves. Literally Crackity Jacked down the middle.
First half is more melodic pop, to some degree. Complete with the heard it too much Monkey gone to even.
After the thrashy split in the middle, the albumr turns darker and a touch more gothich. Definitely enjoyed the end of the album more. Reminiscent of Concrete Blonde on There Goes My Gun, drumming and guitar with lots of space.
Bit of a Cult riff on Gouge Away at the end. Latter part of the album strong enough to nudge the rating up for me. A nice surprise when the end is better than the beginning.
It did another thing though, it made me want to get more Pixies records.
