Performer Notes
  • Personnel: Jeff Buckley (vocals, guitar, harmonium, organ, dulcimer, tabla); Gary Lucas, Michael Tighe (guitar); Loris Holland (organ); Matt Johnson (vibraphone, drums, percussion); Mick Grondahl (bass); Misha Masud (tabla).
  • With GRACE, his first full-length statement as a bandleader, songwriter/guitarist Jeff Buckley sets out upon a road less travelled, avoiding the safe and predictable in favor of the ecstatic and the personal. Not that such obvious influences as the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have disappeared from this young talent's music. Buckley's voice is an exquisite, malleable instrument, and from his daring vaults into the upper registers to his long, enraptured middle-register ornaments and moans, he suggests the breakthroughs of a young Robert Plant or Van Morrison.
  • Songs like "The Last Goodbye" (with its coy slide intro and ragaish string backgrounds) and "Lover, You Should've Come Over" (with its late Beatles harmonies and Edith Piaf vocal ornaments) are powerful evocations of failing relationships ("too young to hold on, and too old to just break free and run"). "Lilac Wine" and "Hallelujah" feature his glassy, translucent guitar and poignant vocals in mystical, folkish settings, while "Dream Brother" achieves an almost Doors-like melancholy. Elsewhere, Buckley showcases his new band's power on "Mojo Pin" and "Eternal Life," which draw upon blues imagery and metaphors to create a subtle, hard-rocking atmosphere.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 05/05/2007

It's a beautiful cd to listen to in whatever mood. It has the loud stuff , and then there are the songs that always leave me wondering if Jeff found what he was searching for before his untimely death.
His version of 'Hallelujah' is often regarded as better than Leonard Cohen's version - and Cohen wrote it !!! I have heard other versions of it and NONE compaire to Jeff's.
One morning (really early...) the radio host played 'Lilac Wine'. This was the first time I had listened to a Jeff Buckley song. I still vividly recall the goose bumps I felt at listening to his voice. The next day I searched out the music shops for his cd to buy.
This would have to be one of my top 5 cds of all times. Jeff Buckley is soooooo good. Buy this cd and you'll have purchased one of you favourites of all times.

Jeff Buckley is the best of a generation, and Grace is the haunting final cd that sets the standard for all artists that come after. Its blues rock with true soul, an incredible collection of ballads; raw, personal, and honest. Take the time to listen to it in complete silence~ Grace is a religious experience.

This album is simply amazing. Jeffs only studio album leaves no emotion untouched. Last goodbye is especially memorable. Jeffs amzing vocal range gives the album a very haunting and honest quality. The cover of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah is unforgettable. It's guitar and vocals combine to form a magic song. A must have in any collection.

an absolute classic which is rated quite highly by rolling stone. um i do really like this album but i find myself actually comparing his sound to his fathers and i eventually find myself liking his fathers records like greetings from la and happy sad much more than jeffs. still a great record even if his fathers voice and songwriting abilities ovcershadow his.

An excellent album. Makes me cry over and over again. Jeff Buckley has a beautiful and angelic voice that you have to love. So sad and powerful and moving. Has a track for all occassions and suits so many age groups. A truly universal album that should be in everyones collection. A MUST HAVE!!

This is a stand out album that belongs on the shelves of every music lover.
The greatest shame is that this was the only studio effort that Buckley completed, as I, as I am sure would others have loved to hear what else he could offer the world.
Grace is one of those definitive albums that everyone knows and will talk about forever.
I love his version of Hallelujah and get all teary when I hear it.
There is nothing bad that I can say about this album, which is so ofetn played that due to scratching needs to be replaced.
If you are a young music lover add this to your collection as a must have.uyuyu

Grace is the only albumn that JEff Buckley completed before his untimely death and it is a rare and beautiful thing. Combining Buckley's glorious voice with rock - in places loud and heavy it has influenced countless other artists but still retains its powerful intensity and purity.

3 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 27/10/2006

I have now heard this twice. My opinion has changed. It is not bad, but certainly not amazing. Too many wavering whining vocals, a touch Morrissey with a quiver.

This is not as evident in the second half of the album, where it is more Queen than The Queen is dead, so this raised the rating for me.

I still would not bother going and playing this again, I think. Give me Nick Cave (or even Chris Isaak) instead.

Eternal Life I enjoyed the most, and could completely do without Corpus Christi Carol. Pleasant enough to listen to when you have a bit of a headache though, which is why I put it on again.
