Performer Notes
  • The White Stripes: Jack White (vocals, guitar, piano); Meg White (drums).
  • Additional personnel: Holly Golightly (vocals); Mort Crim (spoken vocals).
  • Recorded at Toe-Rag Studios and BBC Maida Vale Studio, London, England in April 2002.
  • ELEPHANT won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The album was also nominated for Album Of The Year. "Seven Nation Army" won for Best Rock Song. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal
  • Lo-fi in production and uncompromising in approach, ELEPHANT finds The White Stripes continuing to walk to the beat of their own pomo blues drummer in ignoring the enormous expectations heaped on the follow-up to 2001's smash WHITE BLOOD CELLS. Recorded in two weeks, this outing is packed with loose, soulful, and delightfully unpretentious songs that rage and howl. Jack and Meg White hit the ground running with the chugging shuffle "Seven Nations," with its infectious bass line and thudding cadence.
  • Surprises abound, from the wall of Queen-like harmonies that infuse the choppy, psychedelia-tinged "There's No Room for You Here" or a reading of Burt Bacharach's "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" bursting at the seams with distorted guitar. Not surprisingly, the blues are never far from the equation, particularly on the heavy stomper "Ball and Biscuit" with its bursts of screaming guitar solos. Equally impressive is Jack White's slide guitar on the pleading "I Want to Be the Boy to Warm Your Mother's Heart" and six-string histrionics on the chugging "Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine" that shakes and shimmies with Stooges-like aggression.

Rolling Stone (4/17/03, p.102) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...There are still only two of them, but now they sound like an army....Equal measure of Lightnin' Hopkins' crude strum, Marc Bolan's sequined boogie and the cut-'n'-thrust song hooks of the Buzzcocks..."

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 11/01/2007

this is a pretty different album from the white stripes, they are some to watch in the alternative music world, as they are a two piece band, and have many different ideas about songs. there are a wide variety of songs on here, ranging from the bass hit "Seven Nation army" to the classic "The Hardest Button To Button". for an all round good album that is something a bit different from all else out there, check out this.

yeah this for me is the album that every one will remember for years to come. this album is just so damn good and there is not a single bad track on the whole album. well worth buying and then cranking up incredibly loud on your stereo system. This is the album where you think White stripes could be the saving grace of rock, shame that their next record sucked though.

greeeaaaat album by the white stripes. often said to be their best release so far, the album has been widely celebrated internationally, and with good reason too. all of teh songs on this album are great, all catchy and memorable. my favourites are black math, girl you have no faith in medicine and the hardest button to button.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 10/10/2006

The blues will always be relevant due to the great stuff that has already been recorded by legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and all those other wonderfully talented guys. However, most of those blues greats don't record a hell of a lot these days. The White Stripes give us their own take of the blues on "Elephant". Keeping with tradition, no computer aided technology was used in the recording of "Elephant", so soundwise it's got that old blues feeling to it but the actual songs are blues updated for modern times. "Seven Nation Army" will kick anyone's arse and that's just the first track. This is awesome music.

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 01/08/2006

this is a really fantastic album!! seven nation army got a lot of popularity, such as was played on joan of arcadia, and the album really showcases this. some really good songs on here, which are fantastic to play with friends and to chill out or get pumped up to, you choose the mood and st white stripes will deliver!

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 28/07/2006

this is a really good album by the white stripes! although i'm slightly put of the single 'seven nation army' from all the publicity it's got, the rest of the album is brilliant.
my favourite tracks include "black math", "girl, you have no faith in medicine", "i want to be the boy to warms your mother's heart", "little acorns", "the hardest button to button" and "the air near my fingers".

enjoy :)

This is my favourite White Stripes album so far. By just listening to it, you really couldnt tell that its just two people making such a great effort. It also helps having the lyrics in the cover slip.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 25/05/2006

Elephant is a stunning albumn from the eccentrically brilliant blues rock duo The White Stripes. A stripped back approach typifies their sound of guitar and drums combined with Jack White's bluesy howl. Elephant is packed with infectious and clever songs that demand to be played loud. Retro and loads of fun.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 14/05/2006

Elephant is simply The White Stripe's best album. I'm not actually a White Stripes fan - I think they're previous albums are uninspired and I though 'Get Behind Me Satan' was dreadfully boring (I may be the only one). Elephant is a true masterpiece and is filled with songs that encourage you to start moving your body. I strongly recommend you get this album if you haven't heard it - it's by far their best effort so far!
