Performer Notes
  • This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
  • Green Day: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass instrument); Tre Cool (drums).
  • Recording information: Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California.
  • Rock opera and punk are usually two mutually exclusive musical styles. Then again, Green Day has never followed any rock rulebook, so it's not entirely surprising that the trio crafted a punk-rock opera that takes the Bush administration and its policies to task. It doesn't get any more pointed than a couplet from the frenetic title cut that states, "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda/Now everybody do the propaganda!"
  • Under the guidance of any other group of agitated punks, the results of such an undertaking could easily become didactic. But with creative spearhead Billie Joe Armstrong at the helm, AMERICAN IDIOT is melodically driven, with the kind of intellectual bent that allows for a pair of mini-operas, "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Homecoming." Trimmed with a light sprinkling of piano and a big guitar sound occasionally reminiscent of Mott the Hoople, the former skewers the hypocrisy that can pervade small-town life. The latter is equally effective, as clever time changes and sonic flourishes (glockenspiel, doo-wop harmonies, honking saxophone) serve as an intriguing counterpoint to the band's hook-laced riffs.

Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.186) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "On AMERICAN IDIOT, the thirteen tracks segue together, expanding into piano balladry and acoustic country shuffle....Green Day have found a way to hit their thirties without either betraying their original spirit or falling on their faces."

Uncut (p.119) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The Berkeley trio's upbeat poppy punk - equally indebted to The Kinks as The Ramones - shows no signs of fatigue, but has now been put to blatantly political use."

Mojo (Publisher) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[I]n AMERICAN IDIOT, they've recorded what could be their masterpiece, a 13-song, hour-long set that's both ambitious and expertly original."

This cd is a load of crap! green day are sell outs! they suck so much! why do people even listen to this crap!?
i can't even listen to this man its rediculousy painfull to listen to. he has such a whinig voice and every song sounds exactly the same. I do not think people should even consider buying this, what a waste of money. unless you ran out of toilet paper and plan to put this in its place.

i love green day and this is just another awesome album from them. the album titled 'american idiot' tells the story of the life of a character called jimmy. this album is apparently like a 'rock opera' what ever that is.. but overall this album is pretty damn good. my favourite track is a pretty slow tempo 'give me novacaine'

2 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 04/06/2007

Like a lot of Green Day's music, this CD is fairly hit and miss. Some of the tracks are excellent, and some are rather boring. Overall, it has to be said that there are better Greenday albums to be had.

Some tracks have some good punk styles to them, and others are more melodic in nature. However, there are more than a few that just don't cut it. This is a CD for fairly devoted Green Day fans only who want to complete their collection of this band. Simply put, their early stuff is better and more consistent.

This CD is Green Days bestest ever! Almost every song ROCKS! The only songs I am sick of hearing are Boulevard of Broken Dreams,Get Me Novocaine, and Wake Me Up When September Ends. My favorite songs(in no particular order) are American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday, Are We the Waiting, St. Jimmy, She's a Rebel, Extraordinary Girl, Letterbomb, Homecoming, and Whatsername. Phew! If you are a true Green Day fan, you will love this CD

2 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 16/04/2007

Green Day were a lot more fun when they were singing about girls, drugs, masturbation and the boredoms of American suburbia. There's a little too much jumping on the political bandwagon going on here and the American government is just too much of an easy target for rock and roll these days. Back before things turned to shit, that's when bands like this were needed. Give me a hand full of "Dookie" any day.

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 12/04/2007

this album was pretty damn catchy. some songs did drag a bit from the whole 'rock opera' phase which makes a 9 minute track swell. never the less it is an album with great songs great lyrics which is composed of brilliantly!
this album is a little more grown up and political of green day which just shows us how they have grown as artists that have been around for decades!

5 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 24/03/2007

a lot of rockers hate green day because they are too commericalised (and let us face it, they are) but you can not deny that these boys have some darn good catchy tunes. this latest album from the band has propelled them in to rock star dom, with such great hits such as holiday and boulevard of broken dreams

4 of 5 Stars! Customer review on 10/03/2007

Green Day music is always cool and i loved the American Idiot MV. But, I have to say I like Green Day's older music better (Nimrod's my fav!) than this album. The first few songs of this album are pretty good, but then I realised the whole album sounded pretty much the same. The songs were a bit too long and dramatic, almost like they tried too hard to be political. Nevertheless Green Day rocks!
