The concept of THEOLOGY is an ambitious one: a double-length release, it finds Sinead O'Connor tackling mostly the same set of songs twice, in two very different settings. The first half was recorded in Dublin, and utilizes a spare acoustic approach, while the second features tracks laid down in London with a wider, more electric sonic palette. The material is a mixture of O'Connor originals and covers, the latter including Curtis Mayfield's "We People Who Are Darker Than Blue," the traditional "Rivers of Babylon," and even "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR.
The thread linking the tunes as well as the two stylistically disparate sessions is O'Connor's avowed intent to provide spiritual solace in a war-torn age. The spiritual subtext running throughout--sometimes overt, sometimes subtle--makes the whole of THEOLOGY cohere where such an extravagant undertaking might otherwise go off the rails.
